Jeffrey Riffell, a UW professor of biology, studies mosquito sensory systems, particularly their sense of smell. Learning what attracts mosquitoes can help develop better control and containment efforts against these insects, whose bites can transmit diseases.

UW ranks in the top 10 of best global universities
The University of Washington tied for No. 7 on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings, released on Tuesday. The UW maintained its No. 2 ranking among U.S. public institutions. The UW also placed in the top 10 in nine subject areas ranked by U.S. News, including many health and life sciences.
