GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an innovative, user-oriented and technically proficient individual to provide leadership and vision to a team of talented experts committed to utilizing technology to deliver information at the point of need to faculty, staff and students in the health sciences. The HSL serves over 20,000 individuals, including: top-ranked Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Community Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Social Work; a top rated public university biosciences research program; and two large academic medical centers and their affiliated neighborhood clinics. A nationally recognized regional educational program offers training sites throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI). The HSL is composed of the Health Sciences Library and Information Center, the Social Work Library and the K.K. Sherwood Library at Harborview Medical Center, and is a part of the University Libraries. The HSL has close collaborative affiliations with the Health Sciences Schools and manages the Learning Commons for the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine and Public Health. The HSL serves as the headquarters for the Pacific Northwest Region, National Network of Libraries of Medicine. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
As leader of the HSL systems team, this position is responsible for the overall direction, administration and management of UW HSL computer resources, systems and networking including:
- Plans, develops, implements, integrates and supports all computing resources, systems and networking
- Manages and supervises three FTE senior computer specialists and two-three FTE students
- Leads evaluation and management of the Health Sciences Learning Commons composed of four computer classrooms as well as a large walk-in computer laboratory (http://healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/commons/)
- Develops and supports computer applications for HSL staff
- Leads evaluation and management of digital services including the extensive health sciences web portal - HealthLinks (http://healthlinks.washington.edu)
- Coordinates computing and systems support for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/Pacific Northwest staff (funded by a contract from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health)
- Collaborates with Health Sciences Schools and Medical Centers, University Libraries and others in planning and delivering digital information and educational resources
- Identifies and evaluates new information technologies for integration into library services that improve user and staff time, effort and workflow
- Supervises systems administration and educational technology support groups for public and staff computing, including printing, desktops/notebooks, wireless, videoconferencing, media archive, servers, security, networking, web platform, and other specialized technologies for digital services
- Serves as liaison for assigned departments in the health sciences, including providing information regarding library services and programs, subject-specific teaching, consultation and resources selection and information desk consultation
- Engages in teaching, scholarship and service
- Participates as a member of the HSL leadership group
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace
- Strong communication skills and customer service orientation
- Minimum of three years of experience in library systems and networking operations in a complex environment that includes hands-on work with database-driven web sites with a thorough understanding of relational databases and web architecture
- Demonstrable expertise with Windows XP and MS SQL as well as management of Unix and Windows servers
- Hands-on experience with middleware including XML, XHTML, DreamWeaver, JavaScript
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Supervisory experience
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to identify important trends and development in IT of significance for the library and lead the development of responsive systems and programs
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Photoshop, Flash and streaming video
- Experience with Cold Fusion/ASP/.Net/PHP and Plone (or other content management system)
- Experience in an academic health sciences library
- Grant writing experience
- Record of involvement in professional associations and/or evidence of publications or presentations
SALARY:
$55,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of
Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity
Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is
accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of
12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
