Meet Volunteer Mark Gwaltney

Mark Gwaltney, ’80, ’81, has put his Husky pride into full gear while volunteering at many UW Alumni Association events for countless years.

Mark grew up in Seattle's north end and attended Nathan Hale High School. As a young boy, his ultimate dream was to attend the UW. “When I was born, the bassinet had University of Washington Huskies on the side,” he said. Mark was born a true Husky indeed.

He majored in sociology and graduated in 1980, and later earned both a certificate and a master’s degree in education in 1995. As an undergraduate, Mark belonged to the Zeta Psi fraternity for all four years and was very engaged in other campus activities, such as the Interfraternity Council and writing occasional articles for The Daily. Mark was also an alternate "Mic Guy"” for the Husky Cheer Squad. In addition, he traveled with the World Cheerleader Council, teaching summer cheer camps.

After UW, Mark taught at West Seattle High School, Spanaway Lake High and for 15  years in the Marysville School District at Cedarcrest Junior High and Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Mark first became interested in becoming one of our dedicated UWAA volunteers while helping with events featuring noted UW sociologist Pepper Schwartz. "I love the family that is purple and gold and serving and meeting the family is a blessing. Meeting fellow alums at all variety of events is great and I have many friends and connections," he said. In addition to volunteering with the UWAA, Mark has been involved with the University Presbyterian Church, Nathan Hale High School Foundation and Lifelong Aids Alliance.

Mark brings energy, ambition and Husky spirit to his personal life. In his spare time, he loves to play the piano and to watch Husky football. He hasn’t missed a home game since he was a freshman. Mark also enjoys books by Robert Frost and Truman Capote and paintings by his all-time favorite artist, Andrew Wyeth.

We’re fortunate and excited to have Mark Gwaltney as part of our dynamic circle of dedicated volunteers. Our heartfelt thanks to Mark for his contribution to the University, alumni association and community!
