Dear Friends,
I can't believe the 2013 season is already upon us! What a grand season it is going to be. As I have traditionally done in past autumn editions of the e-News, I'd like to give you a brief description of what you can expect at all of this year's halftime shows, even though the season has of course already started:
Aug. 31 (vs. Boise State):
The V-A band presented a show developed around game day slogan (and season-long team mantra) “Retake Montlake.” The show included Quiet Riot’s COME ON FEEL THE NOISE, Todd Rungren’s BANG THE DRUM ALL DAY, EMF’S 1990 hit UNBELIEVABLE, and Macklemore’s international hit CAN’T HOLD US.
Sept. 21 (vs. Idaho State)
The inaugural performance of the 2013 Husky Band featured the 61st celebration of Band Day. The removal of the stadium track means we were not able to invite as many bands but we were still thrilled to host 24 high school bands for this long-standing Husky football tradition.
Sept. 28 (vs. Arizona)
The stadium theme for this game centered around welcoming the student body back, and so did our show. The show included hits by current popular artists Bruno Mars and Beyoncé.
Oct. 12 (vs. Oregon)
Coach Sark and the team selected the Oregon game as the 2013 "blackout" game. To support this theme, our halftime show featured only tunes that have to do with the word “black” or “night.” The band also performed our popular “Script Huskies” during its pregame performance.
Now that we've caught up with where we've been so far this year, let's take a look at what's coming up!
Oct. 26th (vs. Cal)
Over the last 20 years, the HMB has presented three different halftime shows featuring the music of Seattle and Northwest artists. With the Seattle sister act “Heart” and Garfield High graduate Quincy Jones having just been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we figured this would be a good year to repeat the theme.
Nov. 9 (vs. Colorado)
This game day theme is "Committed to Service," and will salute our veterans and public service in general. Our halftime theme will feature the lively music of the WWI and WWII era. This is also the 4th annual UW Cheer Day, which will bring 500-600 high school cheerleaders from throughout the Northwest to Husky Stadium.
November 29th (vs. Washington State)
This year’s Apple Cup is sponsored by Boeing, so the halftime theme is “FLIGHT." It will include an eclectic selection of tunes such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers' AEROPLANE, Frank Sinatra’s COME FLY WITH ME and a new arrangement of Paul McCartney’s JET, penned by Doug Cheney (a name that many band alumni will remember, as he has arranged many of the band’s most popular tunes over the last several years).
Whether it is Husky football, basketball, volleyball or one of the many UW sports the band supports, the members of the 2013 HMB are all anxious to perform for all of you this season. Enjoy their performances and their immense hard work, and thanks for your continued support!
Go Dawgs!
