Dear Friends of the Husky Band,
With the release of each new e-newsletter, I am excited not only by the opportunity to communicate the latest news regarding the band, but also by the gratifying response from the readers! This e-newsletter is a joint effort between the band and the UW Alumni Association, who gives the newsletter its first-class “look” and sends it out to all of our supporters. The UWAA is also able to track how many readers take time to open the newsletter and which articles are read the most. In the six years we have been working with the UWAA, the Husky Band e-newsletter has consistently rated the highest of all the newsletters the UWAA collaborates on! I want to genuinely thank all of you for your interest in the news the staff and I have to report. We take great pride in keeping all of you informed, and we love the fact that you enjoy being informed!
Even though another school year has come to a close, the Husky Band remains active. We’re one of the few college marching bands that comes together in the middle of the summer to perform in parades. If you’ve attended the downtown Seafair Torchlight Parade in the last 40 years, you know that the Husky Band regularly joins with alumni members to perform as a 150-member marching band for that exciting event. These joint “Varsity-Alumni” performances are a regular feature of the Husky Band, and that is certainly not the case with most college bands. We’re thrilled to have so many alumni who are eager to come play with us!
For the first time ever, the Husky Band and HMB alumni be joining talents on to make the trek up to Abbotsford, British Columbia, to perform in their Canada Day Parade on July 1. These joint performances are not only a wonderful way to maintain our rich history of community outreach, they also give current members and alumni the opportunity to maintain friendships and build new ones. Many of these varsity-alumni band performances employ members from across several decades. Of course the most “notable” Varsity-Alumni team-up at the first football game of the season, when current members and alumni join together to present the pregame and halftime show; yet another unique performance that few college band programs—at least for those on the quarter system—ever attempt to coordinate.
In closing, I want to thank all of you who make the Band Foundation’s “Sneak Preview” every August a must-attend event on your calendars! Read on for more information on this year’s event. The annual Husky Band Alumni Golf Classic is another event this summer that supports band scholarships. This year’s event—a joint effort between the Husky Band Alumni Association and the Husky Band Foundation—promises to be bigger and better than ever! Even if you’re not an alum of the band, I hope you’ll consider putting together a foursome and joining us! It’s scheduled for August 10 and will once again be held at the beautiful Washington National Golf Course. As in the past, all proceeds go toward band scholarships, particularly the Andrew Mandel Memorial Drum Major Scholarships. Opportunities are also available for you or your company to sponsor a hole! Serious golfers should note that that the winning foursome will be granted an automatic spot in the Acura Alumni College Golf Championship at the renowned Pinehurst Golf Resort in North Carolina in October.
Thank you again for your support of the band and enjoy this latest edition of the Husky Band E-Newsletter!
Go Dawgs!
