Fostering Future Phamacy Leaders Members of the School’s Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) have long supported pharmacy students with their time, expertise and mentorship. Now, the PAA is proud to announce that its members are providing students with financial support, too.
The PAA recently awarded third-year students Kevin Su and Jeannette Zimmer with its first two Pharmacy Alumni Association scholarships. Your gifts are making an immediate impact in the lives of these students. The scholarships will help Su and Zimmer with the ever-increasing costs of textbooks, student fees and tuition. What’s more, they serve as an important reminder that our alumni are looking out for our students. “Your generosity—especially during the economic recession that our country is experiencing—is much appreciated and I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” wrote Su in a letter to the PAA. He added that the scholarship will allow him to worry less about his expenses and help him attend national conferences to learn more about pharmacy opportunities. This commitment to professional development is a trademark of our student body, as is a commitment to student-outreach opportunities. In fact, Zimmer is director of the UW student chapter of International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF). In that role, she recently helped raise more than $1,100 to donate much-needed textbooks to pharmacy students in Ethiopia. She and IPSF also spent last fall raising awareness for another worthy cause—the BABES Network, a YWCA program that provides peer support, advocacy, education and outreach to women with HIV and AIDS. The students also brought in more than $400 for BABES through a World AIDS Day fundraiser. To learn more about how you can be part of this Pharmacy Alumni Association partnership or to renew your membership, please visit the PAA Web site. And if you’d like to meet with current students and network with fellow alumni, you won’t want to miss this year’s Katterman Lecture and reception—the event drew more than 150 alumni, students, faculty members and friends last year.
