April 2009
From the Dean
A new publication, a new name and lots of news—our first issue of SPH E-news is chock-full of change. Combining Updates and Spotlight on Research and taking them online isn’t a task we’re undertaking lightly, but we hope it will accomplish three goals: save costs, reduce our use of paper and bring you more timely news. More... Faculty Larry Kessler, the new chair in Health Services, comes to us from the FDA. Read about his work, our new director at the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice, 13 new faculty members and honors galore for our faculty. Students Amanda Fretts’ eyes light up when she talks about her research—diet, exercise and diabetes in rural Native Americans. She started college thinking about medicine, switched to medical anthropology, and finally realized she belonged in public health. The Magnuson Scholarship Committee agreed, and named her our 2009-10 Magnuson Scholar. Meet Amanda, four new ARCS fellows, and the 2008 Bullitt Environmental Prize winner, Clarita Lefthand. News of Note On rankings, awards—and apologies. Plus, the School of Public Health, Student Public Health Association, and Public Health-Seattle & King County are pleased to announce the First Annual SPH Public Health Photography Contest. Spotlight on Research Tom Wickizer delivers the spring 2009 Distinguished Faculty Lecture at 3:30 p.m. in T639 Health Sciences on May 18. Plus more than five million Americans have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and there’s a new case diagnosed every 70 seconds. Bud Kukull and the School’s National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center are doing something about it. Alumni Research by the School’s 2009 Distinguished Alumnus, Frederick Rivara, '80 (MD, MPH), led to community bike helmet programs around the world. Read about Rivara and other alumni. And please keep your updates and photos coming through the School’s Web site. We’d love to hear from you! Mark Your Calendar Save the date for these upcoming events. |
