Faculty in Transition
Dave Eaton, professor in our Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and director of the Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health, has agreed to serve as interim vice provost for Research as Mary Lidstrom moves into her new role as interim provost. Dave has been an associate vice provost for the Office of Research since 2005.
In 1968, Al Hallstrom came back to the UW (he received his B.S. in physics here) to join the Mathematics department. Through a remarkable series of serendipities, Al joined the Department of Biostatistics in 1974. He was promoted to professor in 1984, retired as professor emeritus in 2009, and in between directed the UW Clinical Trials Center and the Coordinating Center for Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium.
Jane Koenig was hired by the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences 36 years ago to lead human research studies on common air pollutants. In July, she was appointed professor emeritus and lauded for her contributions to teaching and mentoring students, and for her research on the health effects of air pollution, in particular its effects on children. You can read more about Jane and her work in her departmental profile. Professor of Biostatistics Thomas Lumley is leaving the UW for a position at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
James Woods, whose academic work was in pharmacology and epidemiology, retired from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences as research professor emeritus last June. His research focused on the gene-environment interactions that explain humans’ susceptibility to toxicity from heavy metal exposures. November 2010 | Return to issue home
