UW ADVANCE and the Office for Faculty Advancement, part of the Office of Academic Personnel, partnered to offer a second fall workshop on Effective Practices for Conducting Interviews. This workshop addressed best practices for conducting first-round interviews over Zoom or other platforms as well as best practices for conducting final interviews and campus visits. 

This workshop was designed for faculty and staff who will participate in faculty hiring in the next academic year and was offered on November 18th and 21st, 2024, in two formats: an in-person workshop and an online webinar.

Effective Practices for Assessing Faculty Application Materials

UW ADVANCE and the Office for Faculty Advancement, both of which are now part of the Office of Academic Personnel, partnered & offered a fall workshop on Effective Practices for Assessing Faculty Application Materials in October 2024.

This workshop addressed mitigating bias in evaluation, using assessment rubrics, and achieving consensus on which applicants to move forward.

This workshop was designed for faculty and staff who will participate in faculty hiring in the next academic year and was offered on October 1st, 2024, in two formats: an in-person workshop and an online webinar.

Preparing for Faculty Hiring in our Current Climate

Each workshop covered: 

  • Brief review of current policy, legal, and political climate for faculty hiring;
  • Planning ahead for forming search committees,faculty search guidelines and charge,writing job ads, drafting assessment rubrics, and devising an active outreach plan;
  • Focused discussion about situations where committee members have prior professional and personal relationships with applicants and how to address potential conflicts of interest, bias, and perceptions of bias.
  • This workshop was designed for faculty and staff who will participate in faculty hiring in the next academic year, 2024-25.

Troubleshooting Faculty Searches: A Focused Discussion on DEI Statements and Known Applicants

UW ADVANCE and the OFFICE FOR FACULTY ADVANCEMENT partnered to offer a Spring Webinar on troubleshooting faculty searches.

This event was intended for anyone who is leading a unit that is hiring, chairing a search committee, or serving on a search committee.

The webinar focuses on two common challenges: assessing DEI statements and evaluating known candidates.  How units navigate these challenges during the faculty search process can have either positive or negative impacts on their culture.  This webinar explores questions like: What preparatory work should units and search committees do to address potential challenges? How should DEI statements be assessed? What is the potential role of the DEI statement in the assessment process? How should conflicts of interest be defined and managed? What are effective strategies for evaluating known candidates?  By planning for the possibility of encountering challenges like these, units can more successfully navigate the assessment and decision-making process and positively affect their culture.
