UW Stroum Center to host Spring Research Symposium May 1
The UW Stroum Center for Jewish Studies will host its third annual Spring Research Symposium 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in room 214 of the HUB. The event is free but advance registration is recommended.
This half-day event highlights research by the five members of the 2014-15 Jewish Studies Graduate Fellowship, with topics ranging from biblical interpretation to Jewish animated short films.
The graduate students are Summer Satushek of comparative religion, Christina Sztajnkrycer of French and Italian studies, Katja Schatte of history, Justin Shanitkvich of English and Molly FitzMorris of linguistics. Each has received funding and mentoring from the Stroum Center to further their work related to Jewish Studies. You can read biographies and blog posts by each at their homepage.
Panels at the symposium will be led by Jewish Studies faculty members Gayla Diment, professor of Slavic languages and literatures; and Kathie Friedman, associate professor in the Jackson School of International Studies.
The first panel is titled “New Readings of Jews in Texts,” and the second panel is titled “Changing Borders of Identity.” Look online for a complete schedule of the symposium. Learn more about Stroum Center events on Twitter at @jew_dub, or on Facebook.
