Research Notes
Office of Educational Assessment
University of Washington

N-96-3 July, 1996

Gerald M. Gillmore
Lauren Basson

The Office of Educational Assessment began surveying University of Washington seniors in winter quarter of 1992Footnote 1, and has done so annually during spring quarter since 1994Footnote 2comma Footnote 3. In the spring of 1996, a questionnaire was administered to undergraduate students who were regularly enrolled at the Seattle campus and who had obtained more than 135 credits toward graduation.

For the 1996 Senior Survey, a random sample of 1400 students was drawn and each was sent a questionnaire by mail. A follow-up post card was sent two weeks later. Twenty-nine addresses were incorrect, and questionnaires were completed by 533 students, for a response rate of 39%. Females were somewhat over represented in the respondents (54.4%) relative to their percentage in the sample of 1400 (47.7%).

In this brief report of the results of the 1996 survey, response percentages are given for each item across all students. Responses of freshmen and transfer students were compared and those that were found to be statistically significant (p < .05) are shown in bold type. Following the presentation of the response percentages, means (or percentages) for freshman and transfer entrants are given for all those items showing statistically significant results. This report ends with a summary of open-ended comments.

Among the items in this Senior Survey were 28 written to be parallel to expectation questions that appeared on the 1995 Entering Student Questionnaire. A comparison of the responses of the two groups to these items is found in another reportFootnote 4.
