The University of Washington: A Vital Asset for the People of Our State
The University of Washington contributes greatly to the quality of life
and economic competitiveness of our State. We prepare students to
be productive members of the workforce and active participants and
leaders in their communities. Our faculty create new technologies,
products and knowledge, and they seek solutions to society's most
pressing problems. Finally, the UW itself is an economic
engine that employs thousands, purchases goods and services, generates
revenue and attracts out-of-state dollars.
The UW provides the highest quality education to thousands of citizens:

The UW ranks 10th among public universities in quality of undergraduate
programs.

UW graduates on average perform in the top 10% on national graduate-
and professional-school entrance exams.

Nearly one-third of UW Ph.D. programs rank in the top 10 nationally, and
almost three-fourths are in the top 25.

The UW faculty includes 4 Nobel Prize winners, 38 National Institute
of Medicine members and 36 National Academy of Science members, 9
National Academy of Engineering members, 3 National Medal of Science
holders, 1 National Medal of Art recipient and 1 National Book Award winner.
The UW adds to the knowledge base through research and development:

The UW is second among all universities in attracting competitive
federal research funding.

Interdisciplinary research at the School of Medicine includes major
projects in heart disease, diabetes, human genetics, Alzheimer's, women's
health and AIDS.

UW faculty research has important applications in industry, which results
in our rank of third in industrial research and development support.

The UW ranks fifth in the nation in licensing income from discoveries
and innovations.
The UW furnishes world-class health care and medical training:

The UW School of Medicine ranks first in the nation in primary care training.

The School of Medicine works with communities throughout the state to
provide better service to rural and underserved areas.

Our School of Nursing is ranked first and the School of Dentistry is
ranked third nationally.

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine is ranked fourth in
the Master of Public Health program and fifth in the Master of Health
Administration program.
The UW contributes to the state's economic well-being and
competitiveness:

The UW generated $2.9 billion of economic activity and $116 million in
related tax revenues in Washington State during fiscal year 1995.

Since 1975, 45 new Washington companies have been formed based on UW
research and technology--24 of those in just the last five years.

Microsoft and Intel hire more graduates from the UW than from any other
single institution.

One year after graduation, more than 95% of 1995 bachelor's degree
recipients were either working or in school--of those employed, 85%
held jobs in Washington State.
