COURSE DESCRIPTION:
HOW HAVE THE PAST EXPERIENCES OF
EARLY JAPANESE IMMIGRANTS SHAPED
JAPANESE AMERICAN COMMUNITIES TODAY
IN THIS COURSE, WE EXPLORE THE RICH
BUT STILL OFTEN OVERLOOKED HISTORY
AND CULTURE OF JAPANESE AMERICANS,
STARTING WITH THEIR MIGRATION,
LABOR, SETTLEMENT AND COMMUNITY
FORMATION, INCARCERATION, REDRESS
AND REPARATIONS, AS WELL AS
INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE AND MODEL
MINORITY STEREOTYPES. ALTHOUGH WE
CONSIDER NIKKEI LIVES IN A NATIONAL
CONTEXT, WE SHALL FOCUS ON THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST. WE SHALL ANALYZE
HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS, ORAL
INTERVIEWS, LITERATURE AND POETRY,
AND POPULAR CULTURE. COURSE
MATERIALS SHALL DISCUSS HOW JAPANES
AMERICANS WERE NOT SIMPLY VICTIMS O
ANTI-ASIAN AND ANTI-JAPANESE RACISM
AS WELL AS SEXISM AND LABOR
EXPLOITATION, BUT INDIVIDUALS WHO
EXERCISED AT LEAST SOME DEGREE OF
AGENCY AS THEY STRUGGLED AGAINST TH
CONFINES THAT ENCLOSED THEM.
