Description:

The Academic Services (AS) unit within UW Information Technology (UW-IT) provides reliable computing infrastructure for a wide range of academic and administrative uses. Responsibilities include system administration, software engineering, and operational support for academic and administrative systems, student computing centers, videoconference facilities, and other technology-based learning spaces. In addition, this unit provides client support and technology workshops, and collaborates with campus partners supporting initiatives and outreach in support of teaching and learning with technology.

In partnership with the Student Technology Fee (STF) Committee, UW-IT, AS is seeking two UW students to serve as Student Server Admins. The Server Admin will provide both data analysis and administration for Windows Systems. This position requires a team-oriented person, familiar with complex Windows systems. This position directly supports the teaching and learning missions of the University.

Duties include:

  • Core responsibilities include Windows server management, performance, monitoring and tuning, disaster recovery, collaborating to find solutions to organizational needs, and providing support and complex problem resolution as related to the underlying Windows technology and infrastructure.
  • Provide support to departments implementing the Campus KeyServer service, including in-person, phone, and email support.
  • Support outreach efforts to promote the use of Campus KeyServer service, and LabStats software including consultations on software installation, specifications and troubleshooting.
  • Basic data analysis of license and software usage using tools such as LabStats.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must have Windows systems engineering experience, including hands-on knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and client technical support.
  • In addition, candidates should be knowledgeable in computer hardware and software support.
  • Candidates must work well as a member of a team and independently, communicate effectively both verbally and written with colleagues and clients, demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision, exercise good judgment, and meet deadlines.

Desired Experience:

No prior work experience is required, however, the following is desired:

  • Ability to assess technology needs, troubleshoot, and offer relevant solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and support new technologies.
  • Other relevant technology, education, or client support is a plus.
  • Experience supporting SQL servers is desired.
  • Also desired: Experience with many of the following technologies: DNS, VPNs, IPSec, Firewalls, Powershell, .NET4, Visual Studio, REST, Web services, SQL, LDAP, Kerberos, Samba, SCOM, SCCM, Sharepoint, Exchange, Tivoli Storage Manager and X509 digital certificates.
  • Previous experience with the Sassafras KeyServer platform is not required.

Terms:

Applicants must be enrolled at the UW and be in good standing with twelve credits or more of coursework. Applicants are eligible to work up to 19.5 hours per week, and are required to work a minimum of 12 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm. Applicants must be able to make a three (3) quarter commitment to this position.
