UW-IT maintains a number of Web sites and intranets in order to provide information about our web tools,
technology spaces, and services to the UW community, as well as provide technical information and tools to UW-IT staff.
The Student Web Developer is responsible for assisting in development and maintenance of UW-IT web properties.
He or she posts content, designs new pages, assists in developing Web tools for internal and external use, and
fixes bugs. This position provides flexible hours and ample opportunity to learn.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Development of new pages or features for Web sites and applications
- General maintenance of pages in content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal
- Check Web sites for quality and integrity of information
- Proofread Web content
- Help plan, develop, and maintain Web-based tools
- Attend regular team meetings
- Additional duties as assigned
Criteria for Selection
- Must be a matriculated UW student
- Must be available to work at least Autumn Quarter 2013 through Spring Quarter 2014
- Must have experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and be able to provide examples
- Must have a clear understanding of web standards and how to design pages within those standards
- Experience with server-side and/or client-side Web programming
- Experience programming in Python, PHP, Perl, or Ruby desired, or
- Experience programming iOS or Android apps desired, or
- Web design experience desired, or
- Strong Linux skills desired
- Experience in Agile software development practices desired
- Experience in JavaScript libraries like jQuery, YUI, etc. desired
To be a successful contributor, Student Developers are expected to work a MINIMUM of 10 hours per week --
preferably more as your schedule permits -- up to 19.5 hours per week. Work hours can be somewhat flexible,
Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. After the initial probationary period,
the ability to work from home on occasion may be granted.
A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
