8th Annual UW Global Accessibility Awareness Day (UW GAAD)
GAAD is an annual global event, designed to engage people around the world in talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion.
Additional information about GAAD is available at https://accessibility.day.
Each year, the UW commemorates GAAD by offering a day of lectures, workshops, and other activities related to digital accessibility. In 2024, we will be celebrating with a hybrid event, in person and on Zoom.
Date: May 16, 2024
Time: 9:30am – 1:00pm
Location: Odegaard 220 and virtual via Zoom
UW GAAD 2024 sessions are free and open to the UW community, but registration is required.
Bring your own device for in-person activities.
NOTICE: The elevators from the Central Parking Garage (CPG) to Odegaard Library (elevators 164 and 165) have been taken out of service for now. Anyone who needs disability access to Red Square from the CPG will need to use the Kane Hall or Meany Theater elevators.

Session Descriptions
Keyboard Accessibility Activity: TABulous Game Session
Ramp up your keyboard accessibility testing skills! Keyboard testing is an important tool when assessing the accessibility of your website. Join us as we play a couple of interactive online games that will build your skills and help you to identify common keyboard-related accessibility issues. This activity will be led by IT Accessibility Team members Jeane Marty and Hadi Rangin.
Alt Text Activity: ALTernate Perceptions Contest
Alt text provides textual information of visual content for Assistive Technology users. But, what should alt text include? How much is enough? How much is too much? Join us to see examples of images in different contexts and learn about alt text best practices. Then, put those practices to use in a game of ALTernate Perceptions where we’ll provide the image with context, and you craft the alt text. This activity will be led by IT Accessibility Team members Gaby de Jongh and Anna Marie Golden.
Digital Accessibility Awards Luncheon: Awards Ceremony and Pizza
Awards will be distributed on Global Accessibility Awareness day to individuals or teams in the UW community who have demonstrated a commitment to digital accessibility over the last year. Pizza will be served.
