Caring for progress: supporting science, educating through outreach, and promoting the 3Rs in research that involves animals.
At the University of Washington Animal Care, Outreach, and 3Rs Program (ACO3Rs), our mission is to advance both science and the well being of animals through innovative research, benevolent care, and informative outreach, while championing the principles of the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement.
By embracing our core values and principles, we aspire to be a leading force in promoting ethical and humane treatment of animals, fostering scientific progress, and cultivating a compassionate society.
Importance of animal research
The University of Washington endorses the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, & Refinement) of animal research and supports animal research when necessary for understanding biological processes, biomedical research, conservation research, public health, development of novel treatments, and ensuring drug safety in compliance with regulatory requirements. Ongoing discussions at the university focus on ethical concerns, animal welfare, and alternative methodologies to determine the necessity, timing, and rationale behind animal research, while balancing challenges in studying complex biological processes through alternatives. The ACO3Rs program aims to enhance understanding and promote dialogue on these issues.
While recognizing the complex ethical dilemmas associated with animal research, the university’s faculty, and staff pioneer innovative approaches to address the 3Rs of animal research. This commitment extends to supporting advancements in alternative methods, such as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and human-based studies, with the goal of minimizing the necessity for animal testing. Ultimately, the university aims to strike a balance between advancing scientific knowledge and minimizing harm to animals, reflecting its dedication to navigating the complexities of ethical considerations in research practices.
