Share Your First-Generation College Experience

National First-Generation College Celebration is on November 8.

The National First-Generation Celebration takes place each year on November 8, the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965, to acknowledge and celebrate the success of first generation college students past and present.

University of Washington alumni who identify as First-Generation college students are invited to share their stories! We welcome everyone’s experiences, undergraduate and graduate alike. Through this project, UWAA aims to share the personal stories that come with the first-generation college experience, and remind current students that they are not alone — they have a community of UW alumni who are here to support and encourage them now and long after they earn their degree.

Alumni stories will be shared on the UWAA’s website, and students will be invited and encouraged to view and be inspired by those who have also “been the first.”

Telling Your Story

We invite you to reflect on the following questions when crafting your story for the National First-Generation College Celebration. You may upload photos to go with your written story — whatever is comfortable and convenient.

  • What does being a First Generation college student mean to you?
  • What motivated you to go to college?
  • What was the best thing about your college experience?
  • Who did you turn to when you needed support?
  • What advice would you give to your college self?
