Building Community and Advocating for Change

As the winter quarter progresses, the CIRCLE Student Advisory Board (SAB) continues advocating for international students, fostering a more inclusive and supportive campus environment. This quarter, we’ve focused on enhancing transparency in tuition, credit, student resources, and cultural representation through legislative discussions, community partnerships, and student-led initiatives.

SAB has been actively discussing topics related to CPT/OPT clarity, housing challenges, financial aid, and health insurance which many international students have struggled with. More clarity on work authorization timelines, credit history requirements for off-campus housing, and tax filing requirements will be helpful in elevating experience of living and study at the University of Washington.  To address these concerns, SAB has been brainstorming potential legislative proposals in collaboration with GPSS and ASUW through our liaison members Jood and Selbi. While still in the early stages, these discussions aim to improve access to resources and policy transparency.

Key Discussions on International Student Life

Beyond policy, each week, SAB has been facilitating conversations among members on student well-being. Topics have included mental health resources, navigating stress and cultural adjustment, career development and professional networking, home remedies and self-care, and building healthy relationships while adjusting to life in a new environment. These discussions help identify gaps in support and guide future advocacy efforts.

How International Students Can Get Involved

CIRCLE SAB encourages all international students at UW to share their concerns and ideas. If you have feedback or suggestions, reach out to us through the CIRCLE uwcircle@uw.edu to help shape initiatives that better support the international student community.
