SAB Member Highlight: Judy Machuka

Judy Machuka is not just a student. She is a dedicated advocate for global health, an inspiring mentor, and a visionary leader. As a second-year Master of Public Health (MPH) student in Global Health at the University of Washington (UW), Judy’s journey from Kenya to one of the world’s leading public health institutions reflects her unwavering commitment to making a global impact.

From Kenya to UW: A Passion for Global Health

Before joining UW, Judy worked as a counselor in a public hospital in Kenya, where she encountered firsthand the challenges of balancing clinical work with health research. Refusing to accept the status quo, she took the initiative to establish a multi-disciplinary support group committee, fostering collaborative research and developing community-centered health interventions.

In 2023, she successfully led health-focused holiday programs for children of hospital staff and created inpatient support groups—efforts that laid the foundation for future interdisciplinary research and culturally sustainable health initiatives.

A Leader in Academia and Advocacy

At UW, Judy has embraced multiple roles that extend beyond the classroom. She serves as an academic student employee for undergraduate programs, offering guidance to students while deepening her own expertise. Her passion for mentorship is evident in her active participation in the School of Public Health Mentoring Program.

Judy’s leadership extends to key advisory boards across campus. She serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for Students, the Board of the International Student Success Program, and finally on the Student Advisory Board (SAB) of CIRCLE (Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange)

As a legislative assistant for the CIRCLE SAB, she plays a crucial role in advocating for the unique needs of international graduate students and student parents. This position has allowed her to build cross-disciplinary networks, engage with diverse student perspectives, and champion initiatives that enhance student life at UW.

A Vision for the Future: From UW to Kenya

Judy is set to graduate in June 2025, with plans to gain a year of work experience in the U.S. before pursuing a PhD in Global Health. However, her ultimate goal remains rooted in Kenya. She aspires to join the faculty at Pwani University in Kilifi, her hometown, where she hopes to cultivate the next generation of public health leaders and develop sustainable health interventions for rural communities.

Her passion for community-centered solutions, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global engagement exemplifies the very essence of public health leadership.

A Legacy of Impact

Judy Machuka’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to health equity. She embodies the transformative potential of international students at UWbringing diverse experiences, bridging global perspectives, and driving meaningful change both locally and globally.
