UW Seattle Faculty Community Engagement Leads

Introduction:
As part of a tri-campus effort to build institutional capacity for community engagement, during the 2023-4 academic year UW Seattle* will host Faculty Community Engagement Leads for the project. In partnership with and supported by the tri-campus Community Engagement Working Group, UW Seattle Faculty Community Engagement Leads (Faculty CE Leads) will, with teams of other faculty and staff leads from the Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma campuses, lead progress on key capacities for community engagement. Details:
There are 4 Faculty CE Lead positions available. Each position may be funded for 20-25% FTE. They will focus on collaboratively leading in the following priority areas:
- Tri-campus Principles, Planning, and Processes for Community Engagement (2 positions) (position description)
- Develop community engagement best principles and blueprints in alignment with diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Support or incorporate community engagement in campus-scale strategies and planning
- Remove fiscal policy/process barriers to community engagement
- Faculty and Staff Professional Development for Community Engagement (1 position) (position description)
- Support faculty and staff community engagement by developing and expanding resources for professional development, promotion and tenure, and other supports
- Student Training for Community Engagement (1 position) (position description)
- Grow student community engagement training and professional development opportunities
Efforts will take place between November 15, 2023 and September 15, 2024, and can flex around existing commitments, provided that the funded %FTE (0.2-0.25 depending on the applicant’s need and availability) is available for participating over the course of the 10 month position.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be a member of the UW faculty per FCCH21 in the UW Faculty Code, and their primary appointment must be on the Seattle campus.
In addition, applicants must have the funded %FTE (20-25% depending on applicant’s need and availability) available within the timeframe of the work to be done; a letter of approval is needed to show this. Timeline:
- October 30, 2023, 11:59pm: Deadline for applications
- mid-November: 2023 UW Seattle Faculty CE Leads announced
- Late Fall Quarter 2023: Initial onboarding as feasible
- Winter Quarter 2023: Join Priority Work Teams; launch efforts
- September 15, 2024: deliverables submitted
Application Process:

- A letter of no more than 3 pages, addressing:
- Statement of why you want to participate in tri-campus capacity-building for community engagement
- Philosophy of / approach to community engagement
- Evidence of community-engaged scholarship, teaching, or other activities (including relevant examples of programs built, courses developed or other capacity building)
- Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Your CV
- A letter documenting approval from your dean or department chair as appropriate (PDF of email is fine)
Checklist for discussion with department chair/dean:

Template language for letter of approval:
I am writing to confirm that [name] is a member of the faculty in [X unit], and they are available to participate as a UW Seattle Faculty CE Lead from November 15, 2023, to September 15, 2024. [They have X FTE and will require X type of compensation]. Furthermore, I am aware of and comfortable with the fact that the position, and the deliverables associated. If selected, [X person in the unit] shall be the unit contact regarding this person’s Faculty CE Lead position.
Review Criteria:
The following review criteria will be examined, in addition to eligibility as described above:
- Evidence/examples of effective community engagement
- Evidence/examples of commitment to DEI processes and outcomes
- Interest and examples in leadership for capacity building (programs built, courses developed, etc.)
- Evidence/examples of collaboration across units, campuses, universities or sectors
- Cohort representation with respect to
- Discipline
- Demographics and lived experiences
- Method of community engagement (citizen science, CBPR, etc)
- Academic focus of community engagement (scholarship, research, teaching, service)
- Rank/title
- Other identity(ies) not covered above
Terms and Conditions:
As part of this gift-funded effort to build infrastructure and capacity for community engagement, in 2023-4 funding will support four (4) faculty members at the equivalent of 20-25% FTE each, to help lead these efforts at the campus and tri-campus scales. These positions will work with the other funded faculty and staff leads at each of the three campuses. The funding can be allocated as course buy-out, summer salary or another method as appropriate.
This position will interface with their chair or dean as appropriate, with accountability and support from the Project Director for Community Engagement, and the Community Engagement Working Group.
