A national magazine that ranks colleges according to how much good they do for the country has placed the University of Washington at eighth nationwide.

A new compound developed by UW scientists in collaboration with other researchers makes normally “blind” cells in the retina sensitive to light, possibly allowing people with degenerative blindness to one day see again.

Raising research money online
A recent article in UW Today reports that increasing numbers of UW students, faculty and staff are using “crowd funding” to pay for their research. Master’s student Rachel Aronson made a YouTube video for her campaign to interview Alaskans about climate change.
