Front Porch Winter 2011

The Office of Regional & Community Affairs is excited to share with you the latest edition of Front Porch. Here are a few of the highlights:

Each week, hundreds of at-risk Seattle schoolchildren meet one-on-one with their “Husky Buddies”—teacher candidates from the UW College of Education who are helping prepare them for success in school and life.

UW student Joe Stout is helping children throughout our community smile more brightly by learning about and providing specialized pediatric dental care.

Daniel Winterbottom, UW landscape architecture professor, and his students, are creating “healing gardens” at Seattle area health-care facilities to help ease the stress of critically ill people and their loved ones.

High School Mathematics Academy

The College of Engineering Mathematics Academy helps high-achieving high school juniors develop the math and problem-solving skills necessary to succeed in engineering and exposes students to engineering in practice. Open to all students, the Math Academy especially targets underrepresented minorities in engineering including African American, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander and female students. Applications are being accepted for summer 2011 and are due by March 2, 2011.
