Friday, November 4, 2011 is “W Day”, celebrating the opening of the Territorial University of Washington on November 4, 1861, on a site bounded by what is now 4th and 6th Avenue on the west and east, and Union and Seneca Street on the north and south, but what was then a quiet wooded knoll far away from the rough and tumble gold rush town of Seattle. Join the festivities  on Red Square beginning at 10 am.

Computer science and political science have joined forces to create a citizen-written Living Voters’ Guide that helps ordinary voters form and share their opinions on the current ballot initiatives.

Professor of Architecture Steve Badanes, who helped build and design the iconic Volkswagen- wielding troll under the Aurora Bridge in Fremont, has a new idea – a Chia Pet Fremont Troll. The Fremont Troll has been a popular destination for Seattleites and visitors since 1990 and is featured in the Lake Union section of the new UW in Seattle Neighborhoods web portals.

Sound Transit invites the community to a public meeting to discuss preliminary construction plans for the building of Brooklyn Station in the University District. According to Sound Transit, the station will serve the North Link of the completed light rail system connecting Seattle, Capitol Hill, the University District, and Northgate.

“National Food Day” is the theme of day 1 of the 2011 Sustainability Summit, running today through Wednesday in Red Square and at other campus locations. Come see two film showings on the modern industry of food production starting at 5:30 this evening in Kane Hall. Other exhibits and presentations over the three days showcase the student-funded Campus Sustainability Fund and its impact over the previous year. You can also learn about the UW Climate Action Plan; the role of community partners in UW sustainability (Mayor McGinn will be here for Tuesday’s panel discussion); and ways that you can get involved. Everyone is invited.
