2015 Annual Report on University of Washington Master Plan, Seattle Campus

Linked below is the University of Washington’s Seattle Campus Master Plan Annual Report covering the period from January 1 through December 31, 2014. This report is required by the City University Agreement (Ordinance 121193) and is sent to the City Council, CUCAC and Seattle DPD for review.

During the reporting period, the University slightly increased the amount of leased space in the University District Northwest Urban Center Village (UDNUCV) by 10,334 square feet, bringing the total leased space in this area to 314,563 square feet. The total number of UW employees in this area increased slightly to 3,789 people with 1,241 of these working in leased space. Total leased space in the City of Seattle was 1,452,919 square feet.

The University continued to participate in the University District Partnership by contributing staff time and money to help start the organization. The University also worked with neighbors and students to improve the North of 45th area. These efforts included UWPD patrols, safety walks, newsletters and neighborhood cleanups.

UW and Tsinghua University launch groundbreaking partnership with the Global Innovation Exchange

UW and Tsinghua University of Beijing are partnering on a new graduate institute in Bellevue that will focus on technology and innovation.  The Global Innovation Exchange, or GIX, will be located in the Spring District in the Bel-Red Corridor.  Microsoft is donating $40 million in support to jump-start the effort.  This partnership is unique in that it is the first time a Chinese research university has established a physical  presence in the U.S.

GIX will open its doors in the fall of 2016 with an inaugural master’s degree in technology innovation, and will grow with additional degree and certificate programs and fields of study over the next decade.

Study reveals surprising truths about caregivers

A study lead by Emilio Zagheni, a UW assistant professor of sociology is believed to be the first to break down unpaid caregiving in the United States by age and gender of caregivers and those they care for and reveals some surprising truths about caregiving in America.

The study found that almost one-third of the U.S. population are informal caregivers and collectively provide about 1.2 billion hours of unpaid work weekly.  But the so-called sandwich generation (people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children) comprises just 3 percent of total informal caregivers, much less than researchers anticipated.  Also noted, there are fewer adults caring for their aging parents than anticipated.
