Quarantine

Rodents arriving from outside facilities usually go through a period of quarantine and testing before being released into the general animal facility population. Fenbendazole-medicated chow is fed in quarantine as prophylaxis against pinworms for a minimum of 5 weeks unless expedited quarantine is approved.

The duration of quarantine is determined by the RHMP and may depend on the outbreak history of the sending institution. Most rodent quarantine durations are 5 weeks which allows time for adequate pinworms prophylaxis, sample collection, shipping, and evaluation of test results.  Expedited quarantine is 2-3 weeks and requires additional testing.  Contact RHMP (rhmp@uw.edu) for pricing.  Expedited quarantine needs to be approved PRIOR to rodents being shipped.

Please see this flow chart of the quarantine release process.
