Dr. Raimon Duran-Struuck, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACLAM, FAST, joined the University of Washington in 2024 as Professor and Chair of the Department of Comparative Medicine. He is committed to upholding the highest standards of care for all animals in biomedical research while fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and scientific excellence. With a passion for advancing biomedical research and training the next generation of leaders in laboratory animal medicine, he aims to bring a dynamic vision to UW’s Department of Comparative Medicine. Before joining UW, Dr. Duran-Struuck was an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where he served as Residency Program Director for Laboratory Animal Medicine since 2015. In addition, he held leadership roles within Penn’s University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) and was an active member of the Institute for Immunology, the Colton Center for Autoimmunity, and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics.

Dr. Duran-Struuck’s career has been shaped, in part,  by a passion for bridging laboratory animal medicine and immunology to drive meaningful advancements in transplantation research. Prior to his time at Penn, he was an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Department of Surgery and Head of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology Preclinical Program. His training in laboratory animal medicine and bone marrow transplantation began at the University of Michigan, followed by a second transplant fellowship at the Transplantation Biology Research Center at Harvard Medical School, where he was later promoted to Instructor of Surgery.

As Principal Investigator of the Transplant Tolerance and Translational Immunology Laboratory, his research is focused on immunological tolerance to improve outcomes for patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow and solid organ transplantation. More recently, his work is focused on the challenges of tolerance across xenogeneic barriers, a novel approach with the potential and hope to help many patients that do not receive an allograft due to their limited availability.

At the heart of Dr. Duran-Struuck’s career is a strong belief in the power of collaboration—among veterinarians, physicians, and scientists—to accelerate discoveries aimed to improve human and animal lives. He is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of leaders in laboratory animal medicine and biomedical research. He is deeply committed to ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, recognizing that ethical and compassionate research is fundamental to meaningful scientific progress.

In essence, Dr. Duran-Struuck sees his role at the University of Washington as an opportunity to foster a highly collegiate and innovative environment where faculty, trainees, and collaborators can work together to advance science, medicine, and the responsible stewardship of research animals.
