Project Description:
The Brotherhood Initiative will host an off-campus leadership retreat to welcome our newest cohort of scholars to the University of Washington and begin to develop their networking skills, create connections among each other and their peer mentors, and develop goals that will lay the foundation for them to successfully navigate their first year at the UW.

Project Title: Healthcare Career Pathways: Promoting Pediatric and other Health Careers for Diverse Youth

Project Description:
This project will promote pathways to careers in healthcare for diverse youth receiving primary care in UW Medicine Division of General Pediatrics clinics. Through engaging art and stories from diverse team members, conversations at primary care visits, and links to helpful information, we will strengthen pathways to healthcare careers for youth.

Project Title: Dissertation & Capstone Writing Group: Equipping and preparing graduate students in the final stages of their degree programs and beyond

Project Description:
The project will equip graduate students, including those who are BIPOC and from historically underrepresented communities, with valuable writing tools as they make progress in their final academic requirements. They will also have the opportunity to explore their career trajectories post-graduation alongside a facilitated group of peers, GSEE alumni, and campus partners.

Project Description:
The ECO Youth Summer Institute (EYSI) is an exciting collaboration between the UW College of Education’s ECO Program and Seattle Public Schools, which brings local high schoolers to our university for a 5-day immersive overnight program. EYSI is a crucial opportunity to build a pipeline from local historically marginalized communities to our institution.

Evans School of Public Policy and Governance – Evans People of Color (EPOC)

Project Title: Take up Space: Personal & Professional Development Conference

Project Description:
“Take Up Space,” hosted by Evans People of Color, empowers UW students and professionals through personal & professional development and networking opportunities. The conference strengthens community connections and supports local BIPOC communities. Takeaways will be shared with UW staff and students to implement equitable and inclusive policies.

Office of Equity & Justice, The Graduate School

Project Title: The Graduate Equity Progress Tool: Piloting the Course for a Brighter and Inclusive Future

The Graduate Equity Progress (EP) Tool assists units in assessing and improving equity efforts in graduate education. Adapted from HR/POD DEI Rubric, the tool was piloted in Summer 2023 and involves collaboration with various offices. The final pilot in Spring/Summer 2024, supported by this grant, will refine the tool for a Fall 2024 rollout.

The UW Q Center

Project Title: EnGender: Accessing Your Authentic Self

EnGender is an emerging program that aims to provide free and accessible gender affirming items to anyone who needs them. We are continuously striving to make the Q Center and the University of Washington a more affirming and celebratory place, part of which involves centering the many ways our bodies exist in the world/celebrating the many ways we express ourselves to the world. 

With EnGender, we hope to widen access to gender affirming items and experiences for the greater UW community.

Language Learning Center

Project Title: EIJB+ and Accessibility in the Language Classroom

This project will study DEIJB+ and accessibility in language courses on the UW campus through interviews with current and recent language students. The collected data will be used to create reports and training specifically for language instructors to aid in improving DEI and accessibility efforts in courses on and off-campus.

Black in Informatics (BINFO)

Project Title: Cultivating Diversity in Informatics

This project aims to bridge the gap between Black students and the field of Informatics. Through community-building outreach events, career development workshops, and mentorship programs, we aim to empower Black students for academic & professional excellence; eventually creating a pipeline for underrepresented high school students to thrive.

UW Facilities / Building Services Department

Project Title: English in the Workplace

English in the Workplace courses support UW Facilities staff members who speak English as a second or other language. Course curriculum is customized to teach staff English skills relevant to their jobs. The goals of the program are for staff to improve their English skills, which will benefit them in their current jobs and future job prospects.

Community Engagement & Leadership Education (CELE) Center

Project Title: Culture And Science Exchange (CASE)- Yakama

Culture And Science Exchange (CASE)-Yakama is a place-based program in the UW CELE Center. The program partners with a community center on the Yakama Reservation to provide Indigenous students with culturally relevant STEM outreach opportunities. Five student CASE Mentors implement these opportunities via site visits, campus visits, and STEM ASB.

UAA – Community Engagement & Leadership Education (CELE) Center – Jumpstart

Project Title: Jumpstart Diverse Corp Member Recruitment and Retention Project

In support of UW Jumpstart’s core belief of providing equal education opportunities to young children & breaking the cycle of poverty, we will be intentionally recruiting multicultural and diverse UW students to join our grant-funded program and, to tackle accessibility inequities, providing travel support to our local, marginalized communities.

Project Title: Building synergistic activities with student organizations to increase diversity and inclusivity within the aerospace field

This project will build a sustainable model to attract, retain, and graduate excellent aerospace engineers by developing a series of synergistic events that support women in aerospace while integrating it with the department’s infrastructure and operations.

Biology

Project Title: Anatomy for Change

Anatomy for Change is an outreach program for underrepresented pre-health students which provides hands-on workshops within a cadaver lab. Each event features a teaching team of anatomy course faculty, medical school students, and peer facilitators. The workshop utilizes medical case studies to encourage a problem solving mindset in students.

Professional Staff Organization DEI Commitee

Project Title: BIPOC Mentorship Program

The BIPOC Mentorship Program is a pilot program developed by staff for staff to increase representation and create career opportunities. Mentees will gain the skills necessary to build rewarding careers with the guidance of UW BIPOC leaders. This sustainable model is intended to include a larger portion of the campus population in the future.

Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)

Project Title: AVELA- A Vision for Engineering Literacy & Access

We are providing underrepresented minority youth in local Seattle schools and community centers with the opportunity to get exposure to research topics within bioengineering and biochemistry, learn the basics of computing and Python coding, applying Python coding concepts to AI and other fun applications, explore environmental issues, as well as develop the skills required to create useful web pages.

College of Arts and Sciences

Project Title: Inclusive and Antiracist Pedagogies: Developing DEI-Focused Course Materials through Workshops and Small-Group Cohort Support

This project is a two-pronged initiative which 1) offers a series of programming concerning curricular development and inclusive pedagogies and 2) pilots a small-group cohort where participants engage with the workshop lessons and each other over a quarter to develop concrete materials for their departments and their classrooms.

Project Title: Navigating the Hidden Curriculum: Professional Development Modules for Undergraduates in the Marine Sciences

Project Title: Open Scholarship Commons Community Fellows Workshop Series

Through the Open Scholarship Commons’ Community Workshop Fellowship Series, BIPOC graduate students become leaders in the field of open scholarship, benefit from mentor support, and develop original workshops. These workshops create BIPOC-led peer learning opportunities for the UW community, and portfolio products for Fellows.

Burke Museum

Project Title: Defining Decolonization Screening Launch

Seed Grant funding will support the first official screening of Defining Decolonization, a series of videographed interviews with diverse participants reflecting on their own experiences around museums, diversity, and decolonization. The goal of the videos is to use individual voices and stories to foster shared understanding and promote action.

Psychology

Project Title: Increasing Visibility of POC in the Psychology Undergraduate Mentoring Program

The Psychology Undergraduate Mentoring Program provides support for underrepresented students. In Pursuit of gender-affirming supportive care, the University of Washington Q Center will purchase and distribute sustainable gender-affirming products free of cost to UW students in need. The initiative aims to mitigate the structures of oppression and financial barriers with a focus on the needs of queer, trans, non-binary, gender-fluid, and gender non-conforming individuals while at the same time creating gender-affirming resources.

KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio

Project Title: KUOW Management Essential Training in Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI)

In 2023, KUOW plans to implement an essential training program for managers focusing on the impact of white-dominant norms and how to center cultural norms that focus on racial equity. This training will be adapted into a module format that will be used during onboarding for new hires in a supervisory role.

UW Tacoma School of Education

Project Title: Indigenizing Pedagogy Institute

The Indigenizing Pedagogy Institute cultivates safer spaces for Indigenous students in the classroom. We are reframing classrooms into decolonial spaces centering on community and Indigenous approaches. This will strengthen our institutional capacity and center Indigenous narratives that should be at the epicenter of higher education institutions.

UW-IT Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Community of Practice (DEI CoP)

Project Title: Creating an Inclusive Workplace for Veterans in Information Technology

Returning to civilian life poses challenges for many military veterans. The UW-IT DEI CoP will host a series of online events that include a panel discussion with veteran UW-IT staff from diverse backgrounds, a best practices session to attract, hire and retain veterans in IT, and a nationally-recognized speaker on veteran cultural competency.

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine

Project Title: Improving inclusion and access in occupational therapy education through enhanced partnership among occupational therapy students with disabilities, occupational therapy faculty, and Disability Resources for Students staff

The Center for International Relations and Cultural Leadership Exchange (CIRCLE)

Project Title: CIRCLE Engagement Programs for International Student Parents

Project Title: Husky Career Closet
The Husky Career Closet is stocked with free workplace clothing items that current UW-Seattle students can peruse when facing an upcoming job interview, career fair, or similar event. Compliance & Risk Services

Project Title: Compliance & Risk Services
We hope to translate documents commonly used by youth programs at the University of Washington into the most common languages used by program participants. Providing this information to families in their preferred language demonstrates a commitment to welcoming all Washington families to participate in the opportunities provided by the UW.

Information School

Project Title: INFO & Franklin High School Girls Who Code
INFO & Girls Who Code is a collaboration with Franklin High School Girls Who Code Club, building on FHS GWCC interest in technology & introducing them to Informatics & Freshman Direct Admission. iGWC focuses on bringing the social sciences to information technology and computing, opening doors
for a broader range of students to engage with tech.

Physics

Project Title: Supporting Women in Physics
The Supporting Women in Physics workshops provide women the opportunity to discuss common concerns they face in the workplace. The program will include two workshops: pursuing a physics career, and special challenges of being both a physicist and a parent. The workshops provide a forum for women at different stages of their lives to share their experiences, advice, and solutions.

SafeCampus

Project Title: DEI Educational Video Modules to Prevent Violence
SafeCampus will promote a safe, equitable workplace culture through the creation of three educational videos that rely on evidence-based prevention principles to build skills for members of campus community who are struggling with identity-based conflict. These on-demand videos will provide some skills needed to create resilient, inclusive spaces.

School of Psychology

Project Title: UW School Psychology Equity Caucus
The Equity Caucus seeks to assist graduate students with building understanding, awareness, and capacity to advocate for marginalized students in all contexts. Encouraging students to explore their own identities and the diverse systems in which we work and live increases competencies and benefits every child we will support throughout our careers.

Astronomy Department

Project Title: Decolonizing the sky- Native American Astronomy

The goal of our project is to create and foster a relationship with our local indigenous community that encourages curiosity and an exploration of science through a specifically Native lens. This project will fund an expert to travel to campus and provide planetarium shows to the indigenous community, while also providing specific training to members of the Astronomy Department to create more inclusive outreach opportunities relating to STEM.

AVELA

Project Title: STEM Outreach to URM Middle & High School Students

We aim to provide underrepresented minority youth (defined by the NSF) across Washington state with the opportunity to build cheap heart rate monitor circuits, design and 3D print their own prototypes using CAD software, learn the basics of computing and Python coding, as well as explore the applications of machine learning in solving environmental issues.

Chemical Engineering

Project Title: Peer Mentorship for STEM success

To develop a formal peer-mentoring community connecting incoming chemical engineering students with experienced mentors to provide resources and skill building while also helping students build an engineering identity and sense of belonging. The program and results will be evaluated and refined into a guide to be shared and implemented widely.

Harborview Medical Center Interpreter Services Department

Project Title: Afghan Caseworker Cultural Mediator (CCM) Medical Interpreter Training and Certification

HMC’s Interpreter Services Department is hiring an Afghan Caseworker Cultural Mediator (CCM) to serve new arrivals. Attracting and retaining diverse staff to serve this new community is vital. The grant will provide the CCM with training and national certification as a medical interpreter, expediting hiring bilingual/bicultural staff to serve the Afghan community and promote equitable health care

Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards Project

Project Title: Retraining ourselves and our committees: Equity & anti-bias in selection processes

We hope to build a culture of accountability in scholarship selection processes through selection committee training and process revision to support committee members in actively recognizing where privilege might show up in applications, how bias might show up in reviews, and ultimately work to interrupt that bias in final selections.

Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery

Project Title: Characterizing Microaggressions Among Faculty and Residents at A Tertiary Academic Center

This project will determine the prevalence and characteristics of sexist, racial, and ethnic microaggressions among physicians of various specialties and levels of seniority at the UW School of Medicine. The information gained from this analysis will inform recruitment and retention efforts aimed at improving diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Q Center

Project Title: Menstruation Station

“In pursuit of menstrual justice, the University of Washington Q Center will purchase and distribute sustainable, eco-friendly, menstrual products free of cost to UW students in need.The initiative aims to undo and mitigate the structures of oppression that impact menstruating bodies with a focus on the needs of queer and trans folks who are often left out of menstrual discourse and care.”

Speech and Hearing Sciences

Project Title: A Holistic, Multi-Tiered Graduate Mentoring Network in Speech and Hearing Sciences

Speech and Hearing Sciences will launch a mentoring network for graduate students of historically marginalized backgrounds. The network will connect incoming students to faculty and community mentors, and to other students. In service of wellbeing and support, the program will include regular mentee-mentor meetings and quarterly events.

Project Title: UW Law BIPOC Student, Staff, and Faculty Retreat  

The UW Law BIPOC Student, Staff, and Faculty Retreat aims to create a more inclusive learning environment where social support networks are encouraged to support community and fellowship. Participants will engage in structured workshops and social gatherings to cultivate relationships for ongoing support.

Project Title: Empowering BIPOC Youth: Pathways to Sustainable Design Futures 

Establishing partnerships with community organizations is vital for empowering BIPOC youth and building pathways for these youth to enter landscape architecture and STEM fields. This project funds a student-led youth outreach program to develop and run a sustainable design studio for youth at Jack Block Park on the Duwamish River.

The inaugural DEI Forum, hosted by the Professional Staff Organization in collaboration with staff across UW, is a multi-session, multi-day event designed by staff, for staff, to connect, share insights, and build skills to advance anti-racism and social justice at UW and beyond.

Project Title:Lux Sit Podcast and Premiere Event

GPSS, Graduate School Core Programs, and GO-MAP will produce 12 podcasts featuring grad students from UW’s 3 campuses, highlighting BIPOC students’ lived experiences over the last year and hopes for the upcoming academic year. Project Title: Creating an Embodied Anti-Racist Culture at the UW School of Social Work Classroom Conversations 

This project focuses on creating a group for white identified staff and faculty to build an embodied anti-racist practice together utilizing My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending our Hearts and Bodies as a guide. The goal is to create a culture of whiteness that is anti-racist, connected, joyful, and revolutionary. 

School of Educational Studies (UW Bothell) 

Project Title: A Diversity Blueprint for the School of Educational Studies 

The School of Educational Studies will conduct a needs assessment in our teacher certification programs with the aim of creating a Diversity Blueprint for our School. The needs assessment will help us better understand barriers to and supports for recruiting, retaining, and graduating culturally and linguistically diverse teachers. 

A total of 10 applications were submitted to this Diversity & Inclusion Seed Grant cycle,

This course challenges students to examine how settler-colonialism and white supremacy define fisheries

It develops a year-long transitional program in collaboration with formerly incarcerated students and alumni, pilots the program, and evaluates it. Project Title: Diversity and Equity Book Club

The Diversity and Equity Book Club invites all University Advancement staff to read and discuss books focused on inclusion, equity, and diversity from all genres. Selections include YA fiction, essays, and poetry and focus on topics such as the experience of undocumented minors, intersectional feminism, and the history of racism in America.

CLASSICS & HISTORY

Project Title: Anti-Racism Training for Classicists, Archaeologists, and Historians

The departments of Classics and History are partnering to host two workshops on Race, Basis, and Dissonance, led by diversity consultant Greg Taylor. This project brings together faculty and graduate students from Humanities and Social Sciences and lays the groundwork for future collaboration across the university on issues of diversity.

A total of 12 applications were submitted to this Diversity & Inclusion Seed Grant cycle, from a broad range of UW academic and administrative units. The average grant amount was $1,350, with awards going to seven unique projects throughout the UW community. Project Title: Inclusive Approach to Educational Outreach Through Translated Informational Material

The UW expands its services to diverse local communities through pre-college youth programs, from which 72% primarily serve underrepresented students. In an effort to make information accessible to non-native English speaking guardians, we will translate UW youth program enrollment forms into Spanish, and make them available to all programs.

Project Title: The University of Washington 1st Annual Interprofessional LGBTQ Health Conference

The UW 1st Annual Interprofessional LGBTQ Health Conference will provide a forum to share knowledge and research, promote discussions around institutionalized racism, transphobia, and homophobia, establish a network of LGBTQ professionals, and engage with clinicians, researchers, and community partners to advance LGBTQ health.

URBAN DESIGN AND PLANNING

Project Title: Visibility in the Field: Women of Color in Urban Planning and Design

The seed grant will fund a program with two emerging and successful women of color in urban planning. They will give us insights on authentic community engagement in diverse communities for research, pedagogy, and practice. A video will be produced and uploaded to the UDP website to remember the importance of diversity and inclusion.

DEPARTMENT OF GERMANICS

Project Title: Cross-disciplinary Conversations on Diversity and Inclusion in the World Language and Literature Classroom

The Departments of Germanics will host a workshop facilitated by a professional consultant on race, equity, and diversity in order to provide a forum for instructors in the Humanities division to develop more diverse curricula and create more inclusive learning environments in the world language and literature classroom.

Project Title: Na te reo e ora ai to tatau whare wananga: Through language our university will flourish

Project Title: Improving Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness in Graduate Recruitment at UW Biology

With their Seed Grant funds, the Biology Department will create a series of short videos to be showcased on the graduate recruitment webpage in which current graduate students address questions, as well as share their stories and experiences. They will also hold a live webinar hosted by a diverse group of faculty members, targeted at first-generation, international, and other URM applicants.

BIOLOGY, BOTHELL

Project Title: UW-Bothell Biology Leadership Organization of Underrepresented Mentors (BLOUM)

The Biology Department at UW Bothell will use their Seed Grant funds to create a mentoring program targeting 1st or 2nd year undergraduates in the Biology program who are from historically underrepresented groups in STEM fields, matching them (both in and out of the classroom) with peers that have recently and successfully completed introductory courses.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

Project Title: Excellence, Diversity and Inclusion: Individuals with Disabilities Engaging for Academic Success (IDEAS)

The College of Engineering’s Seed Grant funds will support its DO-IT IDEAS project, which will create a peer-mentoring cohort of students with disabilities from all three UW campuses. It will host monthly workshops, facilitate online activities, provide mentoring, and generate/disseminate ideas for faculty and staff about supporting and welcoming students with disabilities, realizing that many of these students also identify as a member of other underrepresented groups.

COMMITTEE AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RELATIONSHIP VIOLENCE (CASAARV)

Project Title: Intersectional Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Student Needs Assessment at UW-Bothell

Project Title: Recruiting American Indian Students by Connecting at Home – REACH

Project Title: Institutes on the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)

The Evans School’s Seed Grant funding will support their efforts to incorporate additional cultural competency dialogue and training for first year MPA students through Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Institutes. IDI is a theory-based assessment of intercultural competence used by universities, corporations and organizations.

LIBRARIES & TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Project Title: Accessible Resources Day at the University of Washington Libraries

Project Title: Highlighting Diversity and Collaboration in the Corridors of the Physics and Astronomy Building

Project Title: Qolors

SOUTHEAST ASIA CENTER

Project Title: Engaging the Diaspora: Reaching Across Area and Ethnic Studies in Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian America

With their Seed Grant funds, The Southeast Asia Center will hold a series of events beginning with a “Salo-Salo,” the Filipino word for a community gathering, with Student Association members and Southeast Asian Studies, Southeast Asian-American Studies, and Southeast Asian language faculty to get to know each other and enhance student engagement in Southeast Asian studies and faculty engagement with the Southeast Asian-American undergraduate students on campus.

UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, ROBINSON CENTER

BioEnspire operates under three pillars, which all build an inclusive and supportive environment in bioengineering. ECONOMICS

Project Title: This is What an Economist Looks Like

The project aims to increase the visibility of women and minority economists and their accomplishments by identifying economists from a range of backgrounds, obtaining portraits of these economists, and composing information about each economist’s background and accomplishments to be displayed next to the corresponding portrait.

Project Title: GEM GRAD Lab at UW

With their Seed Grant funds the College of Engineering will host a GRAD (Getting Ready for Advanced Degrees) Lab in the fall. The Lab will provide an unparalleled opportunity for future engineering graduate students to learn more about funding and surviving graduate school, securing research internships, finding the right mentor, and preparing for the professoriate or an advanced technical position with a STEM-focused corporation or national laboratory.

Project Title: Expository Writing Program

Project Title: Outreaching Grads Program: Championing the URM Graduate Education Pipeline

Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center in their efforts to expand graduate education to URM students.

Project Title: Arts and Cultures Across American Borders: An Event Series

This project will consist of a series of events showcasing the art, thought and writing of people who have immigrated, migrated or crossed borders to come to the United States mainland. Along with the events, these topics of “border-crossing” will be explored in a set of classes at UW Tacoma during the coming academic year.

NURSING

Project Title: Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Nursing Case Studies

PUBLIC HEALTH/GO-MAP

Project Title: SPH/Go-Map Programming Partnership

THE BROTHERHOOD INITIATIVE

Project Title: Fall Leadership Summit

UW CONTINUUM COLLEGE

Project Title: Courageous Conversation Series

The Courageous Conversations Series will follow a pair of Equity 101 workshops, and the Seed Grant will fund speakers and facilitators that will help to bring UWC2 staff together to discuss the larger themes covered in the Equity 101 sessions. Six one‐hour sessions will be held and a certificate of completion will be offered to all UWC2 participants who attend three of the Courageous Conversations sessions.

UW SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, SPOKANE

Project Title: URiM Pre-medical Resource Fair for Underrepresented Undergraduates

The UW School of Medicine URiM student group will hold a pre-medical workshop and resource fair for underrepresented students interested in medicine in the fall of 2017 in Spokane, WA. Our goals are to encourage underrepresented students to explore medicine as an achievable career option and to help pre-medical students successfully apply to medical school. Students will leave with application resources and a better understanding of the path to medicine: what it takes to apply, what it’s like to be a medical student, and the role physicians play in our community. We hope to also strengthen the UWSOM/ Gonzaga partnership and foster community between UWSOM faculty and students and local undergraduate.
