The Graduate Equity Progress (EP) Tool assists units in assessing and improving equity efforts in graduate education. Adapted from HR/POD DEI Rubric, the tool was piloted in Summer 2023 and involves collaboration with various offices. The final pilot in Spring/Summer 2024, supported by this grant, will refine the tool for a Fall 2024 rollout.

EnGender is an emerging program that aims to provide free and accessible gender affirming items to anyone who needs them. We are continuously striving to make the Q Center and the University of Washington a more affirming and celebratory place, part of which involves centering the many ways our bodies exist in the world/celebrating the many ways we express ourselves to the world.
With EnGender, we hope to widen access to gender affirming items and experiences for the greater UW community.

Anatomy for Change is an outreach program for underrepresented pre-health students which provides hands-on workshops within a cadaver lab. The workshop utilizes medical case studies to encourage a problem solving mindset in students.

Project Title: BIPOC Mentorship Program

INFO & Girls Who Code is a collaboration with Franklin High School Girls Who Code Club, building on FHS GWCC interest in technology & introducing them to Informatics & Freshman Direct Admission. iGWC focuses on bringing the social sciences to information technology and computing, opening doors
for a broader range of students to engage with tech.
Physics
Project Title: Supporting Women in Physics
The Supporting Women in Physics workshops provide women the opportunity to discuss common concerns they face in the workplace. The program will include two workshops: pursuing a physics career, and special challenges of being both a physicist and a parent. The workshops provide a forum for women at different stages of their lives to share their experiences, advice, and solutions.
SafeCampus
Project Title: DEI Educational Video Modules to Prevent Violence
SafeCampus will promote a safe, equitable workplace culture through the creation of three educational videos that rely on evidence-based prevention principles to build skills for members of campus community who are struggling with identity-based conflict. These on-demand videos will provide some skills needed to create resilient, inclusive spaces.

Project Title: Decolonizing the sky- Native American Astronomy
The goal of our project is to create and foster a relationship with our local indigenous community that encourages curiosity and an exploration of science through a specifically Native lens. This project will fund an expert to travel to campus and provide planetarium shows to the indigenous community, while also providing specific training to members of the Astronomy Department to create more inclusive outreach opportunities relating to STEM.

Project Title: STEM Outreach to URM Middle & High School Students
We aim to provide underrepresented minority youth (defined by the NSF) across Washington state with the opportunity to build cheap heart rate monitor circuits, design and 3D print their own prototypes using CAD software, learn the basics of computing and Python coding, as well as explore the applications of machine learning in solving environmental issues.

Project Title: Peer Mentorship for STEM success
To develop a formal peer-mentoring community connecting incoming chemical engineering students with experienced mentors to provide resources and skill building while also helping students build an engineering identity and sense of belonging. The program and results will be evaluated and refined into a guide to be shared and implemented widely.
Harborview Medical Center Interpreter Services Department
Project Title: Afghan Caseworker Cultural Mediator (CCM) Medical Interpreter Training and Certification
HMC’s Interpreter Services Department is hiring an Afghan Caseworker Cultural Mediator (CCM) to serve new arrivals. Attracting and retaining diverse staff to serve this new community is vital. The grant will provide the CCM with training and national certification as a medical interpreter, expediting hiring bilingual/bicultural staff to serve the Afghan community and promote equitable health care
Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards Project
Project Title: Retraining ourselves and our committees: Equity & anti-bias in selection processes
We hope to build a culture of accountability in scholarship selection processes through selection committee training and process revision to support committee members in actively recognizing where privilege might show up in applications, how bias might show up in reviews, and ultimately work to interrupt that bias in final selections.
Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery
Project Title: Characterizing Microaggressions Among Faculty and Residents at A Tertiary Academic Center
This project will determine the prevalence and characteristics of sexist, racial, and ethnic microaggressions among physicians of various specialties and levels of seniority at the UW School of Medicine. The information gained from this analysis will inform recruitment and retention efforts aimed at improving diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Project Title: Menstruation Station
“In pursuit of menstrual justice, the University of Washington Q Center will purchase and distribute sustainable, eco-friendly, menstrual products free of cost to UW students in need.The initiative aims to undo and mitigate the structures of oppression that impact menstruating bodies with a focus on the needs of queer and trans folks who are often left out of menstrual discourse and care.”

Project Title: A Holistic, Multi-Tiered Graduate Mentoring Network in Speech and Hearing Sciences
Speech and Hearing Sciences will launch a mentoring network for graduate students of historically marginalized backgrounds. Project Title: Anti-Racism Training for Classicists, Archaeologists, and Historians

The departments of Classics and History are partnering to host two workshops on Race, Basis, and Dissonance, led by diversity consultant Greg Taylor. This project brings together faculty and graduate students from Humanities and Social Sciences and lays the groundwork for future collaboration across the university on issues of diversity.
A total of 12 applications were submitted to this Diversity & Inclusion Seed Grant cycle, from a broad range of UW academic and administrative units. The average grant amount was $1,350, with awards going to seven unique projects throughout the UW community. Project Title: Visibility in the Field: Women of Color in Urban Planning and Design

Project Title: UW-Bothell Biology Leadership Organization of Underrepresented Mentors (BLOUM)

The College of Engineering’s Seed Grant funds will support its DO-IT IDEAS project, which will create a peer-mentoring cohort of students with disabilities from all three UW campuses. It will host monthly workshops, facilitate online activities, provide mentoring, and generate/disseminate ideas for faculty and staff about supporting and welcoming students with disabilities, realizing that many of these students also identify as a member of other underrepresented groups.

Project Title: URiM Pre-medical Resource Fair for Underrepresented Undergraduates

The UW School of Medicine URiM student group will hold a pre-medical workshop and resource fair for underrepresented students interested in medicine in the fall of 2017 in Spokane, WA. Our goals are to encourage underrepresented students to explore medicine as an achievable career option and to help pre-medical students successfully apply to medical school. Students will leave with application resources and a better understanding of the path to medicine: what it takes to apply, what it’s like to be a medical student, and the role physicians play in our community. We hope to also strengthen the UWSOM/ Gonzaga partnership and foster community between UWSOM faculty and students and local undergraduate.
