Function: To emphasize or call attention to a particular quote on your page/site. Typically used when building storytelling pages.
Number of options: 6
Note: Block quotes will span the entire width of the page if allowed. Be wary of this, especially if using a No Sidebar page. If you want the quote to not span the entire width, utilize the grid shortcode recipe.
Step 1: Browse options and copy and paste shortcode
Look through all the options and select the one that will work best. The corresponding shortcode is directly under the block quote it creates. Copy and paste your chosen shortcode into the WordPress Editor where you wish it to appear.
*Copy all of the code, including the [ ] on either end.
*The lines are only there to separate the different block quote options, they will not show up when you copy over any of the shortcode.
[blockquote style="simple" align="left" name="Eleanor Roosevelt" title="Former First Lady"]Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.[/blockquote]
[blockquote style="simple" align="center" name="Bill Murray" title="Actor, comedian"]Whatever you do give 100%. Unless you’re donating blood.[/blockquote]
[blockquote style="simple" align="right" name="Unknown" title="Unknown"]I am not an early bird or a night owl. I am some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.[/blockquote]
[blockquote style="brand" align="center" name="Khalil Gibran" title="Writer, philosopher"]Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit.[/blockquote]
[blockquote style="brand" align="right" name="Nelson Mandela" title="Former President of South Africa"]It always seems impossible until it’s done.[/blockquote]
[blockquote style="brand" align="left" name="Will Ferrell" title="American actor, comedian"]Before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are. [/blockquote]
Step 2: Customize you block quote
Within each of the shortcodes above there are attributes associated with that block quote. It is within these attributes that you can adjust and customize the content you wish to present.
*Remember, when changing an attribute to keep the quotation marks. For instance, if you are wanting to change the title to Go Huskies, make sure the code appears as follows: title=”Go Huskies”
Attributes:
- style: This is where you choose the styling for the block quote. Options are brand and simple.
- align: This is how you set the alignment for the block quote. Options are left, right, and center.
- name: Set the name for the block quote source.
- title: Set the title of the block quote source.
- id: IDs are a way to assign a unique identifier to a specific shortcode or section. Some shortcodes have slightly different behaviors with IDs than others, to view those as well as best practices please visit our best practices for IDs page.
To change/input the quote for your block quote, simply replace the current filler text found directly before [/blockquote] with your desired copy.
