Thanks for making Summer Study 2020 a success!
2020 provided the first year of hosting Summer Study completely virtual. With all sessions held online, we are excited to learn and improve how we can offer this program in a new format. The following guidelines will help you move through the Summer Study program and gain the maximum benefit from the activities. This schedule lets you know what is planned, when to be ready and where to meet!

Phase 1:
Welcome, Ice Breaker and Success Panel: To kick off Summer Study, you will meet many of the DO-IT staff, introduce yourselves, do an ice breaker, and watch a panel of college students with disabilities. Welcome to Summer Study 2020!

Tech Orientation and Staying Connected: Review most of the main technology we will use this week including Canvas, Zoom, Google docs and email. After the session, use your Snapshots book to email a 2019 Scholar and 2018 Scholar.

Let's Impress! How to Present Yourself: Scholars will learn how to best present themselves well during online meetings and courses. The session will increase the awareness of practices that Scholars can present themselves, particularly as they engage in a college class and deliver a presentation as a class assignment. Note that Scholars should watch a 10-minute online video (Get the Most From Virtual Meetings and Look Good, Too!) and think about presentation issues before the session begins.

Nothing About Us Without Us! Disability Identity: A camper's favorite! DO-IT Program Coordinator Kayla Brown will share her fun presentation called Nothing About us Without US: Unpacking What We Know About Disability. Scholars will talk about what it means to be disabled, look at some key moments for the disability rights movement, and discuss common tropes for characters with disabilities in the media. FIXED and Lunch Bunch: During this session, Scholars will share their thoughts about this complex topic and think about some of the ethical implications inherent in new technology. Together online, Scholars will watch the critically-acclaimed movie FIXED: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement. After the movie, Scholar groups will assemble in Zoom breakout rooms to answer questions about topics presented in the film.

Accessible Technology Demonstrations and ATC Tour: See what assistive technology and apps college students use and how they use them, and tour the Access Technology Center.

Capture Your DO-IT Experience: This class will introduce three different activities that you will work on over the next two weeks to capture your experiences and share them with your friends, parents, each other, and the wider community. These activities include writing a newsletter article; collecting and creating designs, photos, and other "visual" artifacts; and creating a graphic element to go on your web page as a Summer Study retrospective or "vision board."

Interviewing Like a Broadcast Journalist with KUOW’s RadioActive Youth Media: Interviewing is a skill all people can benefit from learning — not just journalists! In this session, you’ll learn how to ask great questions, listen closely to the answers, and conduct an interview like a broadcast journalist. You’ll listen to examples of radio stories produced by Seattle teens, and then practice interviewing your peers in small groups. The goal of this session is for youth to learn the basic skills of journalistic interviewing. After completing this session, youth will be able to identify three interview strategies that lead to interesting answers.

Ice breaker: Phase 2 Scholars will engage in conversation and ice-breaker activities to increase their comfort with each other, catch up on everything that's happened since last summer, and have some fun.

Meet the Pets!: Phase 1 and Phase 2 Scholars are invited to introduce their pets to the group! Participants will also be encouraged to share pet-related stories and memories. Even those without pets are encouraged to join this optional evening activity!

Making the Most out of Makerspaces: Scholars will learn about "Makerspaces," where tools and materials are made available for students to create and build all kinds of things from art projects to engineering devices. Representatives from the University of Washington will talk about how Makerspaces are used, why they are important, and even offer some helpful tips for "making" the most out of these cool new hangout spaces. UW Student Makerspace staff will give us a tour of The Mill and show off the laser cutter in action.

Let's Impress! Presenting Yourself Online: Scholars will learn about presenting themselves well during online meetings. During the session, Scholars will hear from Dr. Burgstahler about her experiences related to online meetings, and share their own thoughts about looking professional and interacting in ways that impress others.

Advocating for Universal Design of Online Learning: Scholars will learn all about Universal Design (UD) and explore examples of strategies to make online learning more engaging and accessible for everyone. Scholars will share their own experience of going online at school, and share their thoughts about the "20 tips" video or publication. Students will learn how they can constructively advocate for themselves at school, to help make classes more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Developing Your Phase 2 Project: Scholars will work together with Mentors and staff to develop ideas for their Phase 2 project. They will learn about past projects, talk about their interests, discuss how other projects such as their senior year project might be incorporated, and begin to develop a timeline for their project.

College Life: In this session you will be put in to small groups to meet with mentors with disabilities to talk about what college was/is like for them.
Instructions: You will be getting into groups to talk to older mentors with disabilities. After the introductions as a main group, you will go to a breakout room with your group. Below are some sample questions you can ask. Feel free to go beyond what is listed here!

Got Game?!? Video Games, Online Gaming, and E-Sports: Get together for a Scholar discussion about gaming and e-sports! Learn about the types of games that Scholars are playing now or have played in the past. We will discuss the different gaming platforms and different ways people stream and play online. We'll also talk about the quickly emerging phenomena of e-sports, which turned into a multi-million dollar industry seemingly overnight!

Brainpower Activate! Center for Neurotechnology: DO-IT Scholars will learn about the human brain, the field of neuroscience, and the research & activities of the UW Center for Neurotechnology (Links to an external site.). We'll discuss careers in many different fields that are needed for this highly collaborative, international Engineering Research Center. Dr. Chudler will talk about technology such as brain-computer interfaces and brain implants, and the group will talk about the ethical considerations of developing and testing such devices.

Tech Talk! 30 Years of IT Accessibility: This "Tech Talk" is being presented on July 30, 2020, the week of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This session will explore how AT and technology accessibility have evolved over the last 30 years, plus barriers that still exist and strategies for addressing them as we move into the future.

Writing for Success: Learn why writing skills are important and methods to be a better writer while learning about scholarships. Get in touch with your networking side by sending a formal thank you email.

Run Through of Presentations for Closing Ceremony: Phase 2 Scholars and Interns will discuss and refine their presentations so they are ready to share their accomplishments at the 2020 Summer Study Closing Ceremonies. These fun, student-lead presentations are always appreciated by fellow students, DO-IT staff, and the larger DO-IT "family." Get ready to strut your stuff and show off some highlights from your camp experience!

Closing Ceremonies: Everyone's invited, especially family and friends! DO-IT Scholars and their guests, along with mentors, instructors, and staff will celebrate accomplishments and reflect on the 2020 Summer Study. Student projects and activities will be highlighted as Scholars graduate into the next "phase" of the Scholars program. We'll hear about Summer Study classes, review what we've learned, check out some pictures and the annual Snapshots yearbook, explore the 2020 Summer Study website, view Scholar video creations, and look back on the first online Summer Study!
