Summer Study 2022 - Tuesday, July 12
Phase 1:
Know Thyself and Others, Too! Disability Identity: In this session, DO-IT Program Coordinator Kayla Brown will share her fun presentation called Nothing About Us Without US: Unpacking What We Know About Disability. Scholars will talk about what it means to be disabled, look at some key moments in the disability rights movement, and discuss common tropes for characters with disabilities in the media. Scholars will improve their ability to:
- Compare and contrast the medical and social models of disability,
- Examine the history of disability and the disability rights movement in The United States and how this has impacted perceptions of disability, and
- Identify common tropes in the media that negatively portrays disability.
In a post-session discussion board, we'll continue the conversation by asking:
- What are your own beliefs and ways of thinking about disability?
- If you could ask someone who was part of the early stages of the disability rights movement a question, what would you ask them?
- Are there any disabled characters in the media that you like or feel a connection to?
