Our work

The Office of External Affairs houses the UW’s government relations, tribal relations, eastern Washington outreach, video production and radio units.

Staff work with state legislators, statewide elected officials and state agency officials to advance the University’s academic and legislative agenda. The office’s main areas of responsibility include facilitating positive relationships with state government; advocating on behalf of the University; educating the campus community about state issues; and ensuring compliance with state public disclosure laws.

2024 State Legislative Agenda

The Office of Federal Relations is located in Washington, D.C. where staff represent the University to both legislative and executive branches of the federal government, participate in a variety of national forums and advocate for UW priorities. The office also serves as the primary access point for the federal government and national organizations to the UW and for UW leadership and staff to our nation’s capital.

2024 Federal Agenda

The Office of Regional & Community Relations serves as a link between the University and surrounding neighborhoods, civic groups and local governments. The office strives to build collaborative relationships between these groups through information sharing, and seeks new opportunities to match the University’s academic capital with needs in the region and local community.

The Office of Tribal Relations coordinates the government to government relationship between the UW and American Indian tribes across Washington state and the northwest region. The office serves as the primary point of contact for Tribes in relation to the University, coordinating visits with University leadership, providing access to UW programs, and helping UW faculty and staff build relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities.

null The Office of Spokane & Eastern Washington Relations represents the University to the government, business and civic communities in Spokane and throughout Eastern Washington. From medical, physician assistant and dental education in Spokane to numerous research and educational initiatives throughout Eastern Washington, the office aims to build and strengthen relationships across the region and seeks opportunities for new partnerships.

From event capture, post-production services and live webcasts to short and long-form videos, UW Video has the experience and resources to provide a full breadth of video production services. UW Video services also include video transmission from key UW facilities, studio rentals and video distribution to over 67k subscribers via YouTube, Vimeo, Roku and Amazon Fire TV.

The UW Board of Regents hold the FCC license for KUOW-94.9 FM and the station’s general manager reports to the vice president. The vice president serves as an ex officio member of the Puget Sound Public Radio Board. The FCC license for KEXP-90.3 FM is held by “Friends of KEXP,” which is an affiliate organization of the UW. The vice president serves as the university’s organizational representative.
