There are any number of ways that University of Washington community members can exercise their free speech rights. There are also time, place and manner regulations and community standards to protect the rights of all community members.
Regularly scheduled University activities take precedence over spur-of-the-moment and/or non-official activities. Examples of activities that are prohibited on UW campuses and at UW facilities and events include:
- Disrupting or obstructing, through words or conduct, the teaching or learning environment of any university educational setting, or any university functions or activities
- Disrupting or obstructing University operations, the freedom of movement, or any other lawful activities, such as by blocking entrances, exits, staircases, doorways, hallways, or the safe and efficient flow of people and vehicles
- Creating unreasonable safety risks or an imminent threat, health or safety hazard
- Physical abuse of any person or conduct which is intended unlawfully to threaten imminent bodily harm or to endanger the health or safety of any person on the university campus
- Damage to or malicious misuse of university property, or the property of any other person where such property is located on the university campus, such as vandalism or defacement of property
- Camping overnight, including erecting a tent or other shelter
- Refusing to identify oneself while on University property to University officials who are acting in the performance of their duties in situations where assistance or intervention is needed; or if a student, failing to comply with requests to identify oneself to University officials when requested
- Amplified sound outside of pre-approved areas and/or when classes are in session
The University expects that all persons engaging in activities on its campuses will act with respect for the safety of persons and property, and will comply with local, State, and federal laws, and University and venue-specific policies.
Violations of these and/or other relevant laws or policies may result in removal from the venue or campus and could additionally be subject to University disciplinary and/or judicial proceedings.
