Welcome to Harborview Medical Center’s Burn Rotation
Within the General Surgery program, residents rotate through a Burn service within the UW Medicine Regional Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center.
The Burn Service Rotation is primarily a Chief Resident run service.
First year residents spend four weeks on this rotation while Chief residents spend 5 weeks.
The Chief Resident is responsible for running the inpatient service and outpatient clinic with direct and indirect supervision by the Burn Attendings and Burn Fellows and is expected to supervise and support the four to five first-year surgical residents in performing their clinical duties for the service.
OVERVIEW
The overall aim of every program is to train you to become a knowledgeable, safe and competent surgeon. These goals – what you are expected to achieve – and objectives – how you are expected to achieve them – are guidelines designed to reflect a series of supervised patient care experiences in a system of graduated responsibility.
Each year at Harborview is designed to present you with a unique set of challenges to help develop your surgical skills in a graduated fashion. Therefore, all seven competency levels in each year must be mastered prior to advancement to the next year of training.
Level-specific competency objectives were prepared by the faculty to give you more concrete examples of the performance standards we expect during each year.
PREPARATION FOR YOUR ROTATION AT HMC
UW Medicine Acct: (Activate your account) This is the first step prior to anything else, and needs to be accomplished prior to your rotation at Harborview. We use your demographic information in MedHub to apply for you. When you receive your confirmation, it is up to you to set up your account. Here are instructions on how to set up a UWnetID and UW medicine account. Account Info ** If you are a Program Coordinator from a participating program (Swedish, Virginia Mason, Madigan, etc.) please contact Ann Haven for account access issues.
Badge: If you do not have an HMC badge you will not have access to many clinical areas including the OR and Clinic. You will need to take a signed form to the Badging office on 8CT 69. Bring photo ID. See Ann Haven for Burns and Suzanne Mills for TICU, Trauma Teams 1 and 2 for the form.
ACCESS: to OR, ED, Locker Rooms, Clinics. This access will be attached to your badge. Ann Haven will request this for you. In the event of a problem, please email hsurged@uw.edu
PACS: Access to this application allows you to see radiology images and reads, including those imported from outside institutions. Suzanne Mills will apply for access for you, once you activate your UW Medicine account.
OR Whiteboard: Allows you to see the OR schedule for all services in real time. Suzanne Mills will apply for access for you once you activate your UW Medicine account.
ORCA and EpicCare Training: This training needs to be done BEFORE you start your rotation at HMC. Work with your program coordinator to register. There can be glitches in access to your EpicCare Application, so a best practice would be: If you have not yet been to clinic at Harborview, and know you have completed EpicCare training, you might want to take a moment and test your access to the application.
Navigate to ORCA Login with your UWNetID and password.
When you come to the main screen,
SELECT EPIC-Hyperspace Then log in again.
If all is configured as it should be for your access, you should be good to go. If at the Epic Hyperspace window you get a message that your role is not configured properly, or something else Is wrong, call the HELP DESK: 543-7012 Doing this will help prevent any “surprises” in clinic and assure you will be able to work with your team starting from the first day of your rotation.
Setting up Preferences in ORCA: You may not have been able to set up your preferences at training, but will need to do so for your rotation. ORCA Set up
PAGERS: Those of you coming from Madigan will need to use an HMC loaner pager while here. Bring with you a check made out to the University of Washington for $50.00. We will hold onto the check and return it to you when the pager is returned. Please contact Ann Haven with any questions.
HMCB R1
Responsibility focuses on initial evaluation and on pre/post-operative care. The R1 assists in operations on his or her patients and performs appropriate operative procedures.
