Welcome to Harborview Medical Center’s Vascular Surgery Rotation
The Vascular Surgery Residency and Fellowship Program provide comprehensive training in all areas of vascular surgery.
Our program offers a rigorous experience in a wide variety of vascular cases including complex aortic cases, fenestrated and branched endovascular aortic surgery, open aortic reconstructions and vascular access and an extensive peripheral experience in open and endovascular techniques.
The rotation at UW Medicine Harborview Medical Center, our Level 1 Trauma Center, offers the unique opportunity to gain significant exposure to vascular trauma and the treatment of ruptured AAA.
OVERVIEW
INTERN /R1
On the Harborview Vascular Surgery Service at Harborview residents are exposed to a wide variety of complex trauma and aortic open and endovascular cases and have the opportunity to experience continuity of care by working up and diagnosing patients in the clinic and emergency department before surgery, assisting with surgery and by providing post-operative care under the direct supervision of four attending vascular surgeons.
Vascular surgery case volume at HMC, particularly in complex aortic reconstructions and endovascular procedures, has increased dramatically and steadily in the past 8 years. Rare and complicated cases involving infected vascular grafts, complex dialysis access and limb salvage procedures are also managed here. This rotation will take advantage of this wealth of advanced vascular cases.
A senior Vascular surgery trainee (R5/Chief Resident, 1st or 2nd yr Vascular Surgery Fellow ) will be the Chief on the Vascular service. The Chief is the team leader for the more junior residents and functions as a “junior attending” under the direct supervision of the attending staff.
The Chief has responsibility for administration of the service, assignment of cases, smooth functioning of the clinic, communication with patients and staff, and will be expected to oversee detailed planning for vascular cases with the oversight of attending staff.
Junior trainees on this service will have active roles in clinic, OR cases, call, teaching rounds and didactic sessions.
Vascular Goals & Objectives/Schedule
HMC Vascular R1
Responsibility focuses on initial evaluation and on pre/post operative care. The R-1 assists in operations on his or her patients and performs appropriate operative procedures.
