Northwest Seattle is the home of popular outdoor exercise hub Green Lake as well as such neighborhoods as Broadview, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge and Wallingford. Its Puget Sound coastline has also been the site of University of Washington adult education field classes through the Chautauqua Program.

3-D printed boat

UW mechanical engineering students paddled to the finish line at Seafair’s 2012 Milk Carton Derby, an annual Green Lake event, in what they believe is the world’s first boat made with a 3-D printer.

UW Pharmacy Cares

University House

In 2010, the UW School of Pharmacy began providing pharmacy services at University House Wallingford, a residential retirement community affiliated with the UW Retirement Association. UW Pharmacy Cares provides one-on-one medication consultations and drug-interaction screening as well as educational newsletters and programs.

UW-Restoration Ecology Network

Licton Springs

The UW-Restoration Ecology Network integrates student, faculty and community interests in ecological restoration and conservation. In Licton Springs, UW-REN volunteers worked to restore the natural habitat of a 9-acre public park. They also created trails and interpretive signs about the ecology and environmental chemistry of the area to provide better access.

Mayor Mike McGinn

Mike McGinnSeattle Mayor Mike McGinn is a graduate of the UW School of Law and lives in Greenwood, where he was a community activist before running for mayor.

Erica Bauermeister

Erica Bauermeister

Erica Bauermeister, ’90 PhD (English), is a resident of Wallingford and the author of two non-fiction books, 500 Great Books By Women: A Reader’s Guide, and Let’s Hear It For the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14, as well as two novels, The School of Essential Ingredients and Joy For Beginners.

Boosting Local Economies

Many businesses with technology developed at the University of Washington have transferred to Northwest Seattle neighborhoods as start-up companies, including:

  • AdRelevance on Lake Union, an online ad-tracking industry.
  • Pavia Systems in Westlake, which creates Web-based training programs for organizations in the asphalt industry.
