Saving Space: Exhibit Design in Small Spaces

Master’s Project by Peter Kleinpass (2016)

The purpose of this project was to examine the way in which museums use exhibition space. Working with a partner institution, the Western Science Center, this project focused on ways to design exhibits in locations with small spaces. A look through current exhibition development literature showed that little to nothing written specifically on designing exhibits in small spaces. The design of the exhibit X Marks the Spot: Understanding Maps employed different techniques and methods for using small exhibit space effectively. While the exhibit was successfully installed, small space issues that proved challenging included exhibit layout, partnering with other learning institutions, and technology interactives. The primary limitation that arose throughout the process was the impact of designing the exhibit long distance, rather than onsite.
