Master’s Project by Angela Mele (2015)
The purpose of this project was to design, fabricate, and install an exhibit about the history of visual representation of slime molds, and to do so using best practices in sustainable exhibit design. Now You See It! A History of Art about Slime Molds, on display at the University of Washington’s Miller Library in September-‐October 2015, showcases slime mold specimens, interpretive graphics, and artistic representations of slime molds made throughout the last four centuries. Visitors will leave with a better understanding of slime mold biology and ecological functions, and will recognize the importance of artistic representation in facilitating appreciation of the natural world. To future exhibit designers, this project serves as a case study for best practices in developing an exhibit addressing the intersection of art and science, using sustainable methods and materials.
