UW School of Medicine appoints new associate dean for clinical affairs
Dr. Paul G. Ramsey, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the University of Washington School of Medicine, has named Dr. Andrew A. “Andy” Ziskind associate dean for clinical affairs and associate vice president for clinical specialty programs.
Ziskind will oversee clinical specialty programs in support of the medical school’s teaching, patient service and research mission. This role will include promoting collaboration among the UW’s affiliated clinical sites. He will work closely with leaders from UW Physicians, the UW Physicians Network, UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and affiliated hospitals and clinics.
“I believe the University of Washington Academic Medical Center’s unique strengths in research, teaching and patient care make us well-positioned for future success,” said Ziskind.
A cardiologist, Ziskind is currently an associate professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and vice president for UniversityCARE, a joint venture of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System. The University of Maryland created UniversityCARE to foster marketplace flexibility, contract for managed care, operate primary-care and specialty networks, and oversee the CarePartners Medicaid HMO.
As UniversityCARE vice president, Ziskind helped develop specialty networks in neurology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology and oncology. He also headed the University of Maryland Multidisciplinary Hospitalist Program.
Among his other achievements were implementing specialty and primary-care disease management programs in congestive heart failure and asthma, helping manage clinical outcomes throughout an integrated health-care delivery system, and educating academic faculty and community physicians on effective responses to a managed care environment.
For the past four years, Ziskind also has served as medical director of the University of Maryland Cardiac Network. He designed and implemented a statewide cardiac care network, and led consensus committees on guidelines and standards for cardiologists and primary-care physicians.
Ziskind is a nationally sought-after speaker because of his experience with UniversityCARE and its specialty networks. His lectures to professional academies and academic medical centers have outlined specific, useful approaches for thriving in a dynamic health-care environment.
Ziskind has also published and lectured extensively on outcomes measurement in cardiology. Since 1991 Baltimore Magazine has listed him “Best of Baltimore” in cardiology.
A 1980 summa cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine, Ziskind earned an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received an executive MBA from Loyola College this year.
