MEDIA ADVISORY: Information on tentative speech by Fidel Castro

A speech by Cuban President Fidel Castro is tentatively planned for 8 p.m. Dec. 2 in Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus, but his appearance in Seattle has not been confirmed. For security and because of Cuban requirements, only a handful of news agencies are being allowed inside the hall. However, provisions are being made to help all news media cover the event.

1) For still photos, the Associated Press will provide pool coverage. Contact AP Seattle with questions. (Barry Sweet 206-682-1812)

2) For TV and radio broadcasters, UWTV will provide a live feed to a pressroom at Kane Hall 110, across Red Square from Meany. The same live feed will go to the WTO press center at the convention center downtown. Dropboxes will be provided at both locales. The campus will be crowded and you are strongly urged to use the downtown WTO center if possible. The campus pressroom will have only 96 broadcast connections (one-third Spanish language). Access will be first-come, first-served, beginning at 6 p.m. The press entrance will be the east door, nearest Suzzallo Library. (Technical questions: Al Ross at UWTV 206-543-9926)

3) Print reporters can monitor the speech live on video at the WTO press center downtown, at the campus Kane Hall 110 pressroom, or at an overflow room in the HUB student center. Press working space also has been set aside in Odegaard Library 220. However, the campus will be extremely crowded and you are strongly urged to use the downtown WTO center if possible.

4) IMPORTANT: ANYONE USING CAMPUS PRESS FACILITIES MUST SHOW PRESS CREDENTIALS. SECURITY WILL BE EXTREMELY TIGHT AND ACCESS WILL BE SLOW. YOU ARE URGED TO ARRIVE EARLY.
