“Millennium Twins” being transferred from UW Medical Center to Wenatchee hospital
Santos and Orlando Villafuerte-Mora, twins born at University of Washington Medical Center in two different centuries, are scheduled to be transferred Friday by ambulance to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. The move will put them closer to the home of their parents, Maria Cruz Mora-Rivas and her husband Emiliano Villafuerte, and 4-year-old brother, Emilio Jr.
The twins have been in the UWMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit since their premature birth at 32 weeks’ gestation. Santos was born at 10:06 p.m. on Dec. 31, weighing 3 pounds, 10 ounces. Orlando, the first baby born in the Seattle area in the new millennium, arrived at 12:16 a.m. on Jan. 1, weighing 4 pounds, 8 ounces. Both are gaining weight and doing well.
When she went into premature labor in mid-December, Mora-Rivas was evacuated by air ambulance to UW Medical Center, where doctors were able to keep her from delivering for two weeks. The 32-week milestone greatly reduces the risk of death and birth defects, according to obstetrician Dr. Thomas Easterling.
The UWMC Service League has funded an array of gifts for the family, including a twin stroller, a crib, a baby swing, baby safety items, educational toys, an Albertson’s gift certificate, baby clothes and layette items, and a gift for older brother Emilio.
