Student foresters bring annual celebration back to Seattle campus
WHAT:
Undergraduates from the University of Washington’s College of Forest Resources will be explaining the range of careers possible in forestry today and competing in logger sports using chain saws, crosscut saws and axes during “Garb Day.” The name refers to the logging “garb” worn by students at the first celebration 70 years ago on the Rainier Vista lawn. The annual event returns this year to its original site after being conducted the last 30 years at UW’s Pack Forest in Eatonville.

Friday, May 19, noon to 5 p.m.

South lawn of Rainer Vista, below the fountain
ACTIVITIES:
Students with the University of Washington’s Forest Club, an organization for undergraduates in the College of Forest Resources, will be:
— Providing information about ecosystem sciences and conservation, wildlife management, forest engineering and logging, paper science, forest products marketing and urban forestry concerning, among other things, the management of trees, forests and wetlands in Seattle and other cities.
— Participating in logger sports. The chain-sawing contest involves skills used today by foresters who build recreational trails, fight fires or harvest timber. The crosscut sawing and ax chopping are reminiscent of earlier times.
