Volunteer gives gift of food

Editor’s Note: The Combined Fund Drive runs through Nov. 21. Throughout the drive, University Week will feature faculty and staff who give back to the community by volunteering their time.

Name: Sarah Walsh

UW position: Reception/Information Desk, Law School

Volunteer activity: Coordinate donations from the Law School and Law Library to Northwest Harvest Food Bank.

Time as a volunteer: About 5 years

Why this activity?

“I believe it is up to us as individuals and as part of a society of great abundance to share with those who are hungry for the basics of life – food. I feel a personal responsibility to assist in facilitating the delivery of donations from law school/library faculty and staff to Northwest Harvest.”

Memorable experiences while volunteering:

“I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Ruth Velozo, the founder of Northwest Harvest. I admire her tremendously for her work, and to meet her was a very memorable experience for me. Also, being able to witness the process of the Food Bank on a daily basis meeting people’s needs is quite rewarding.”

Satisfaction in volunteering:

“I receive tremendous satisfaction from the realization that every donation has filled a void and does make a difference to some individual. Donations alter a negative status. We have added something where there was nothing.
