WOMEN IN SCIENCE: Suzanne Brainard, executive director of the Center for Workforce Development, has been honored with the Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award. The award, named after the first woman astronomer and astronomy professor in the U.S., recognizes an individual, program or organization that encourages the advancement of girls and women in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer science and technology. The winner receives $10,000 from the Maria Mitchell Association.


SILVER ENGINEERS: The Institute of Industrial Engineers student chapter at the UW received a Silver Award from the national office. The faculty advisor is Assistant Professor Benita Beamon, the current president is Rebecca Webber and the past president is Mindy Antolak.


KUDOS: Roger Simpson, an associate professor in the School of Communications, has been awarded the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award for 2001. Rose Calderon, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been appointed to an independent panel that will oversee efforts to overhaul the state’s School for the Deaf in Vancouver . . . Windows on Technology a UW publication edited by C&C’s Kay Pilcher has won first place in the printed computing newsletter competition of SIGUCCS, the Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services. SIGUCCS focuses on preparing its members to assist scholars in the effective use of technology . . . Luis Ramirez, director of the Ethnic Cultural Center, has been reappointed to the Washington State Arts Commission . . . Former UW President William P. Gerberding received the Macalester College Board of Trustees Award for Meritorious and Distinguished Service. Gerberding, an alum of Macalester, served eight years on its board . . . Andy Lingwall, a print media lecturer at the UW Tacoma, has been elected president of the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators for 2002-03.
