Education’s role in shaping citizens examined in forum

Higher Education and Democratic Citizenship is the title of a forum to be held from 7 to 9 p.m., today in Parrington Hall.

During the forum, panelists and audience members will discuss the role colleges and universities have always played in preparing students to be active and informed citizens and taking stock on how it might be done better. Among the questions to be considered are:

  • Are we focusing our citizenship education efforts only on students preparing to enter careers in public service;

  • Should we integrate citizenship education into the general undergraduate curriculum; and

  • Is there a special role to be played by programs that educate future teachers and media professionals?

Panelists include UW faculty Michael McCann, political science; John Gastil, speech communication; and Robert Howard, education. Julia Gold, director of the law school’s Mediation Clinic, will moderate.

The event is co-sponsored by the Forum at the Evans School and the Council on Public Legal Education. For further information call 206-543-0190.

Transportation study is open house topic

The City of Seattle will hold an open house on its University Area Transportation Study from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15 in UW’s Gould Court. The study, which covers the University District and surrounding neighborhoods, includes an area that stretches from Interstate 5 to 35th Avenue Northeast and from Northeast 65th Street to the Ship Canal including the Montlake interchange on State Route 520.

This is the second open house offered, and staff and consultants have developed numerous potential transportation improvements for bicycling, walking, transit, carpool and motor vehicles. The open house will offer a chance to learn about these improvements, comment on how to prioritize them, and examine potential funding strategies.
