ARTIST UNKNOWN: A University Week reader who admired the totem pole on the cover of the Dec. 6 issue called recently asking us to identify the artist. George Snyder would like to know too. Snyder, who gave the totem pole to the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics on Dec. 4, has been trying to determine the artist since he purchased the piece several years ago from Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in downtown Seattle. He promises to keep trying and when he comes up with the answer, we’ll pass the information along.

LOFTY LOFTUS: Psychology Professor Elizabeth Loftus has been named one of the “100 Most Eminent Psychologists of the 20th Century” by Review of General Psychology. The listing is based on citations in the professional psychological journal literature and survey responses from the American Psychological Society, among other things. Loftus was ranked number 58 and is the top-ranked woman on the list. Also making the grade was the late Psychology Professor Allen Edwards, who was number 82.

BOTHELL BEST: The UW, Bothell/Cascadia Community College campus has been named one of the 10 “Best of 2001” projects in Northwest Construction magazine. Winners are chosen by two separate state panels of industry experts. The campus, designed by NBBJ, was completed last summer.

DISTINGUISHED CAREER: James Banks, a professor in the College of Education and the director of the UW’s Center for Multicultural Education, recently received the National Council for the Social Studies 2001 Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career Research in Social Studies Award. The award recognizes professionals who have made extensive contributions to knowledge concerning significant areas of social studies education through meritorious research.

BOWL FEVER: For Husky fans lucky enough to travel to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl, the Alumni Association is planning two events – a pep rally the night before the game and a warm-up tailgate party the afternoon before the game. Both include refreshments and performances by the Husky Marching Band and Cheer Squad. Tickets for either event can be purchased from the Alumni Association (206-543-0540) until Dec. 20.
