Preventing blindness
Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) has awarded a grant of $110,000 to the UW Department of Ophthalmology to suport research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding diseases. Dr. Steven Wilson, professor and chair of ophthalmology, directs the work, and noted that many recent discoveries on macular degeneration, retinal function, glaucoma and corneal healing could not have been made without support from RPB.
To date, the organization has awarded grants of nearly $2.5 million to the UW. Since its founding in 1960, RPB has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions throughout the country.
