David Eschenbach named to lead Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. David Eschenbach has been selected as chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, pending approval by the UW Board of Regents in June. Eschenbach, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and co-chair of the UW National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, has served as acting chair since March 2001.
Eschenbach received an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1968. Shortly thereafter he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the UW. His research interests are in general obstetrics and gynecology, including gynecologic surgery, infectious disease and vaginal disorders.
Among his many awards and honors, Eschenbach has received the annual department faculty teaching award given by the chief residents three times in his career. In 1997 he also received the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Teaching Award. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 29 faculty physicians, seven Ph.D. investigators, 11 fellows, and four certified nurse-midwives, with 24 residents in training.
Eschenbach will succeed Dr. Steven Gabbe, who left the UW to become dean of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine.
