Lectures on the brain and learning

UW faculty members and other biomedical experts will give a series of free public lectures on the neurobiology of learning, addiction and mental illness beginning Monday, July 8. The UW School of Nursing organizes the series as a component of a summer institute for science educators on the brain and learning.

All the lectures will be presented in Hogness Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center. No advance registration is necessary.

•  “Nervous System Overview,” presented by Dr. Pam Mitchell, 10:30 a.m. – noon, Monday, July 8.
  
•  “Neurosignaling,” Dr. Bertil Hille, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 9.
  
•  “Science in the Cinema: Requiem for a Dream,” a graphic video about the consequences of addiction. The video is R rated – not suitable for children. Dr. Akira Horita will conducted a facilitated discussion of the film after its showing, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 10.
  
•  “Overview of Mental Illness in Youth: Assessment of Childhood and Adolescent Mental Disorders,” Dr. Arthur Davis, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., Thursday, July 11.
  
•  “Fight for Your Rights: Take a Stand Against Violence,” Dr. Andrew Benjamin, 2:35 – 3:35 p.m., Friday, July 12.
  
•  “Methamphetamine Safety Education,” Aaron Starks, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., Monday, July 15.
  
•  “Use of Human Subjects in Research,” Helen McGough, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 16.
  
•  “Let’s Talk and Stop the Deadly Silence: Suicide Prevention,” Sue Eastgard, 8:30 – 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 17.
  
•  “Biofeedback: Implications for Stress and Alcohol Addiction,” Dr. Tom Budzynski, 10– 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 18.
  
•  “Club Drugs/Raves,” Matt Gardner, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., Friday, July 19.
